About Madonna del Carmelo

Every year on the third Sunday of July, Caltavuturo celebrates the Madonna del Carmelo Festival, the oldest and most cherished tradition in this village nestled in the Madonie mountains, near Palermo. Organized by the Venerable Confraternity of Maria SS. del Carmelo—founded in 1895 and originally composed of local artisans—the festival weaves together faith, popular devotion, and tradition through novenas, processions of the marble statue, and liturgical celebrations.

The oldest festival in Caltavuturo

In the heart of the Madonie, 635 meters above sea level in the province of Palermo, the village of Caltavuturo dedicates its oldest and most heartfelt celebration to the Madonna del Carmelo. The festival is traditionally held on the third Sunday of July, around July 16th, the date the Church marks the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. Originally, the festivities took place on August 16th, but they were moved to July to avoid clashing with agricultural work—a detail that highlights the deep connection between this devotion and the village's farming and artisan roots.

The Artisans' Confraternity

The driving force behind the festival is the Venerable Confraternity of Maria SS. del Carmelo, the oldest in Caltavuturo, founded in 1895. A unique feature, stipulated in the regulations still jealously guarded by the members, was that only artisans and their children could join: masons, shoemakers, barbers, and blacksmiths found their patroness in the Madonna del Carmelo and would stop work during the festival days to honor her. The confraternity is based in the Church of Santa Maria la Nova, also known as the Badia, which is adorned with 18th-century stuccoes attributed to Felice Sesta and sculptures from the Gagini school.

The two statues and places of devotion

The festival revolves around two sacred images. The original marble statue, created in 1820 by the sculptor Bagnasco, is kept in the Church of the Collegio di Maria (Church of Sant'Agostino), where celebrations and the ancient procession once took place. A second statue of the Madonna del Carmine, dating from the early 20th century, is housed in the Church of Santa Maria la Nova, the seat of the confraternity. The procession through the historic center remains the most anticipated moment, as the statue of the Virgin travels through the village accompanied by a brass band and the choral participation of the community.

A tradition alive for over a century

Linked to the history of the Carmelite Order and the apparition of the Virgin to Prior Saint Simon Stock, the devotion to the Madonna del Carmelo is one of the oldest and most beloved in Christianity. In Caltavuturo, it is renewed every summer with a week of religious services led by preachers, rosary recitations, and Eucharistic celebrations accompanied by music. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic Madonie village, including the Mother Church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the Rocca di Sciara, and the evocative Gole di Gazzara gorges.
