The patronal feast of Petralia Sottana, blending faith and Madonie tradition
The Feast of San Calogero is the main patronal celebration of Petralia Sottana, a mountain village in the Madonie range, in the province of Palermo, Sicily. The festivities begin on June 11th with the traditional sittina a San Calò, a series of morning services at the Mother Church Basilica that guide the community toward the solemn day of June 18th, when the Saint's relic and statue are carried in procession through the streets of the Madonie town.
San Calogero was a hermit saint whose legacy is deeply rooted in the spirituality of Southern Italy. His name, of Greek origin, evokes the "beautiful old man," an ascetic dedicated to prayer. In Petralia Sottana, the Saint is revered as a popular patron, close to the people: as devotees often say, "San Calogero is a people's feast," a celebration that historically does not involve the participation of confraternities or congregations.
The highlight is the solemn procession on June 18th. The statue of the Saint, attributed to Friar Umile da Petralia, is carried on a heavy eighteen-quintal vara, supported on the shoulders of numerous bearers who take turns along the route. The statue leaves the church moving backward so as not to turn its back on the Blessed Sacrament. During the journey, the procession makes eighteen stops, in memory of the day the Saint reached glory upon his death.
The float is adorned with ex-votos, multicolored ribbons, seasonal fruits, bundles of fava beans, and wheat sheaves: symbols of ancient peasant devotion. Amidst the tolling of bells, the sound of firecrackers, and displays of skill with the banner, u paliu, the faithful—many walking barefoot as a vow—accompany the float, shouting "We praise and thank the Blessed Sacrament, Long live San Calò." Families who have made a vow to the Saint distribute blessed bread, cookies, and wine to the bearers and pilgrims.
The festival represents a living fusion of Christian religiosity and ancient popular roots, preserved by the community of Petralia Sottana in the heart of the Madonie Park. More than just an event, it is a defining appointment that reunites residents and returning emigrants, intertwining faith, collective memory, and local culinary traditions.
Surrounding the religious rites, the town enlivens its squares with secular entertainment: the marching band parades through the main streets, while shows and cultural initiatives accompany the days of celebration, culminating in the fireworks display that closes the evening of the procession.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of San Calogero opened on June 11th with the sittina and concluded on June 18th with the solemn procession. The day of the 18th began at 6:30 AM with the festive ringing of bells and firecrackers, followed by masses and the marching band's parade through the main streets at 8:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM, and 5:00 PM.
At 5:30 PM, the Solemn Mass presided over by the Bishop was held; at 7:00 PM, the solemn procession departed from the Mother Church Basilica with the relic and the image of the Patron Saint on the vara, heading toward the Church of Saints John the Baptist and Calogero the Hermit, with the traditional eighteen stops. The evening concluded at 11:30 PM with a fireworks display. In 2026, the festivities were accompanied by celebrations for the centenary of the War Memorial and the Festival of Roots and De.Co. Products (June 20-21).
The festivities open on June 11th with the "sittina a San Calò".
