The feast of the Patron Saint of Salemi, held every December 6th with processions, bell ringing, and district fireworks displays.
The Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari is the main patronal festival of Salemi, an ancient hilltop village in the province of Trapani, in western Sicily. Saint Nicholas has been the proclaimed Patron and protector of the city since 1290, and this devotion is renewed every year on December 6th, when the Salemi community gathers around its saint with religious rites, ringing bells, and fireworks displays.
The deep bond between Salemi and Saint Nicholas was strengthened in 1854, when an epidemic struck western Sicily but spared the city. As a thank-you vow, the people of Salemi commissioned a fine wooden statue from Naples, which arrived in Salemi on December 5, 1855. The work, attributed to the school of Giuseppe Sammartino, is considered one of the city's finest treasures and is kept in the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
The festival follows a well-established tradition repeated every year. At dawn, the ringing of the bells announces the solemn day; in the morning, Holy Masses are celebrated in the Mother Church, while in the afternoon, the solemn Eucharistic celebration takes place, often presided over by a high authority from the Diocese of Mazara del Vallo, featuring the lighting of a votive lamp that remains lit all year before the image of the Saint.
The most anticipated moment is the evening procession: the statue of Saint Nicholas is carried on the shoulders of devotees through the main streets of the historic center, accompanied by confraternities, religious and civil authorities, and the marching band. A characteristic feature of this procession is the tribute paid by the city's various districts, which greet the passing of the Saint with fireworks, almost as if competing with one another. The day concludes with a pyrotechnic show in Piazza Alicia, the monumental heart of Salemi.
In addition to the December recurrence, the city also celebrates Saint Nicholas on the last Sunday of May with the so-called "Lu Fistinu di San Nicola", a patronage festival held every five years, featuring a procession, theatrical performances of the Saint's life in Piazza Alicia, flag-wavers, and a marching band.
For 2026, Salemi (TP) will once again celebrate its Patron Saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, on December 6th. The day will follow the traditional structure of the festival: bell ringing at dawn, morning Holy Masses in the Mother Church, a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the afternoon, and the evening procession of the wooden statue through the streets of the historic center, concluding with a pyrotechnic show in Piazza Alicia, featuring the tribute of the districts with fireworks.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with precise times for the services and the procession, will be published by the parish in the weeks preceding the feast. This page will be updated as soon as the official calendar is announced.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. The festival will take place on December 6, 2026, and will typically follow this structure: morning bell ringing, Holy Masses in the Mother Church, a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the afternoon with the lighting of the votive lamp, an evening procession of the Saint Nicholas statue, and a pyrotechnic show in Piazza Alicia. Official times will be announced by the parish in the weeks prior.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Salemi (TP), between the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Piazza Alicia. Admission to all events is free.
By car, Salemi can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (Salemi exit). The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi, while Palermo Punta Raisi is about an hour and a half away. On festival days, it is advisable to park in areas outside the historic center, as several streets in the old town are affected by the procession.
The main festival occurs every year on December 6th. The novena of the Immaculate Conception, which accompanies the period, begins in late November.
