The patronal feast of Buseto Palizzolo in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is the patronal feast of Buseto Palizzolo, a town in the province of Trapani, nestled among the countryside and olive groves of the Agro Ericino in western Sicily. It is celebrated every year on July 16th, the liturgical feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, and represents the most anticipated moment of the local summer, drawing emigrants, devotees, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The exquisite statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, created by the Palermo sculptor Rosario Bagnasco in 1893, is the heart of the festival. After a long period during which the statue was not carried in procession for conservation reasons, the tradition has been fully restored: restored by Professor Antonino Pedone in Palermo in 2008, the original effigy returned to parade through the town streets starting in 2009. Local devotion is also expressed through the Hymn to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a prayer written by Monsignor Francesco Miccichรจ, former Bishop of Trapani, with music by local musician Nicola Giammarinaro.
The day of July 16th is preceded by the novena, which marks the community's anticipation with prayers, masses, and hymns from July 1st to 15th. At dawn, firecrackers wake the town and announce the start of the festival. In the morning, the Bishop of Trapani celebrates a solemn mass in the Mother Church around 11:00 AM. Around noon, amidst the ringing of bells, the men place the statue onto its processional base: this is the so-called "scinnuta", one of the most evocative and moving moments of the entire celebration.
The highlight is the evening procession, which begins around 9:00 PM. The parade accompanies the Virgin's statue along Via Pianoneve, Via Firenze, Via Pietro Randazzo, and Via A. Diaz, with a stop in front of the Town Hall where authorities pay homage to the patron saint, before continuing to Piazza Principe Umberto. The surrounding countryside and olive groves give the procession a unique charm, deeply rooted in the community's rural identity.
More than just a religious event, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival is for Buseto Palizzolo a moment of collective identity, where faith blends with folklore, brass band music, and the conviviality of the town's streets. For those visiting the province of Trapani in July, it is an authentic opportunity to immerse oneself in the popular traditions of western Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Buseto Palizzolo will take place on Thursday, July 16th, 2026, on the day of the patron saint's liturgical feast. The novena will prepare the community from July 1st to 15th. In the morning, dawn firecrackers and a solemn mass celebrated by the Bishop of Trapani in the Mother Church are scheduled. In the evening, the solemn procession of the statue will travel through the town center, accompanied by the Santa Cecilia Musical Band.
The July 16th date is confirmed as it is a fixed recurrence; the full program of civic appointments and side events (concerts, shows, and entertainment) will be released by the Municipality of Buseto Palizzolo in the weeks leading up to the festival.
