Celebrating the Patron Saint with a historical pageant, solemn procession, and the pane cunzatu festival
The Santa Ninfa Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for this town in the province of Trapani, set among the hills of the Belìce Valley in western Sicily. Celebrated every November, the festival combines religious devotion to the Virgin and Martyr Ninfa with a historical re-enactment that showcases the town's identity and the deep bond between the community and its Patron Saint.
The village was established in 1605, when Don Luigi Arias Giardina founded the town and named it after Saint Ninfa. A second pivotal moment occurred in 1722, when the Saint's relic—an arm bone kept in a precious silver reliquary—arrived in the city, donated by the Prince of Resuttano. These two events, the founding and the gift of the relic, are brought to life each year by the grand historical pageant that opens the festivities.
The historical re-enactment pageant is the most spectacular moment of the festival. Divided into four scenes, it winds through the town center with costumed performers, featuring the Delia flag-wavers and the Aragonese Drummers of Castelvetrano. The parade concludes in Piazza Libertà, which transforms into a Baroque-style celebration with historical groups and ancient dance performances.
On November 12th, the day dedicated to Saint Ninfa, the morning begins with the rolling of drums and a marching band enlivening the streets. In the afternoon, local authorities join a procession to the Mother Church, where, following the solemn mass, the Mayor performs the act of entrustment to the Patron Saint and symbolically presents the keys to the city. This is followed by the procession of the statue, sometimes accompanied by a traditional cavalcade, through the main streets of the town.
Upon returning to Piazza Libertà, the festivities culminate with the pane cunzatu festival, a simple yet delicious specialty of Sicilian cuisine consisting of bread seasoned with oil, tomatoes, cheese, and anchovies. The evening concludes with live music and fireworks that light up the town sky.
Between the sacred and the profane, the Santa Ninfa Patronal Feast is an authentic opportunity to discover the traditions of the Belìce Valley and the hospitality of this corner of Sicily. It is a true community festival, drawing visitors from neighboring towns and emigrants returning home for the occasion.
The 2026 Santa Ninfa Patronal Feast will take place from November 10th to 12th. The dates are confirmed, while the full program with times and details will be announced by the Municipality and the Parish closer to the event. The structure of the festival follows the usual tradition: historical re-enactment of the town's founding and the gift of the relic, religious celebrations, the procession of the Virgin and Martyr Ninfa's statue, and the pane cunzatu festival in Piazza Libertà.
Santa Ninfa is located in the province of Trapani, in the Belìce Valley. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (Salemi-Santa Ninfa exit). The Santa Ninfa railway station is on the line connecting the Trapani hinterland.
The festivities take place every year in November, with the Patron Saint's day set for November 12th.
