Three days of devotion, music, and fireworks along the Lungomare Boeo for the co-patron saint of Marsala
In Marsala, a city in the province of Trapani overlooking the westernmost tip of Sicily, the Feast of Saint John the Baptist is much more than a simple religious observance: it is a defining community event experienced with the intensity of a major patronal festival. Saint John the Baptist is, in fact, the co-patron of the city, and his birth, celebrated on June 24th, has always drawn locals and visitors to the scenic Lungomare Boeo.
The heart of the festival is the church of San Giovanni Battista al Boeo, built in 1555 by the Jesuits on Capo Boeo, just steps from the Lilibeo Archaeological Park. It is a place steeped in mystery: for most of the year, the church remains closed, opening only for the festival to reveal the famous Grotta della Sibilla Lilibetana in its basement, which tradition links to the prophetic figure of the Sibyl and which scholars believe was used by the first Christians of Lilibeo as a baptistery. Visiting the church and the cave during the festival is a rare experience that blends faith, archaeology, and legend.
The 2026 edition takes place from June 22nd to 24th. It begins on Monday, June 22nd, with Holy Mass, followed in the evening by a refined candlelight musical oratorio dedicated to the Baptist. On Tuesday, June 23rd, the vigil mass is followed by a moment of Eucharistic adoration, while on Wednesday, June 24th, the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John, Eucharistic celebrations will follow one another, including one presided over by the Bishop of Mazara del Vallo. The day concludes with the traditional fireworks display on the Lungomare Boeo.
The most anticipated moment remains the fireworks show on the evening of June 24th, an authentic popular attraction that turns the seafront into a great meeting place for families, residents, and tourists. The tradition of fireworks has long accompanied this event and maintains a strong religious, popular, and identity-based value for the Marsala community.
Participating in the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating cities in western Sicily: its world-famous fortified wines, the salt pans and the Stagnone, the Lilibeo Archaeological Park, and a historic center of sober elegance. An ideal destination for those who want to intertwine spirituality, culture, and the sea.
The 2026 edition takes place from June 22nd to 24th at the church of San Giovanni Battista al Boeo, with fireworks animating the Lungomare Boeo. The festival combines Eucharistic celebrations, a candlelight musical oratorio, and the fireworks show, confirming its dual religious and popular nature. On the main day, June 24th, the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, the church opens its doors to the faithful all day long.
