In Afragola, the cult of the two patron saints blends faith, entertainment, and popular traditions
The Feast of Saint George the Martyr and Saint Mark the Evangelist is the initiative through which the Municipality of Afragola, in Campania, honors the cult of the two saints who have accompanied the community's life for centuries. Gathered under the title "Afragola, a city to be experienced on the path of cultural traditions," the event combines religious, civic, and festive dimensions, transforming Piazza San Marco all'Olmo into the beating heart of days dedicated to memory, faith, and togetherness.
The calendar unfolds between late April and the month of May. The first appointment is dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist, celebrated near the historic church of San Marco all'Olmo in the Casavico district: its origins date back to 1615, when the community wanted a place of worship closer to the town than the ancient parish of San Marco in Sylvis, located in the open countryside. The second moment celebrates Saint George the Martyr, with performances, processions, and a devotional route that strengthens the bond between the faithful and their protectors.
The festival alternates religious reflection with entertainment for all ages. The mornings are designed especially for children, with animation, inflatables, and shows, while the evenings bring live music, the costumed Sbandieratori Cavensi (flag-wavers from Cava de' Tirreni), street artists, and Neapolitan cabaret to the square. The result is a blend typical of Southern Italian tradition, where devotion to patron saints goes hand in hand with community celebration.
More than just a patronal feast, the initiative promoted by the municipal administration aims to enhance the historical, cultural, and religious heritage linked to the two saints. For Afragola, a populous center in the Province of Naples, these days represent an opportunity to rediscover their roots and experience urban spaces in a shared way. Admission to the events in the square is free, confirming the popular and inclusive vocation of the festival.
The Municipality of Afragola proposed two appointments for 2026 on the "path of cultural traditions" dedicated to the patron saints. Sunday, April 26, in Piazza San Marco all'Olmo, the day of Saint Mark the Evangelist offered animation, inflatables, and shows for children in the morning (10:00-13:00) and further entertainment in the afternoon (16:00-19:00).
The weekend of May 9 and 10 featured the main festival in the square: Saturday the 9th (from 19:00 to 22:00) and Sunday the 10th (from 18:30) with the Circus Fire-Eater Show, the «Ciccio One Man Show» by Francesco D'Agostino, and the performance of the Sbandieratori Cavensi, in addition to the processional route towards the sites of worship. Free admission.
The main events take place in Piazza San Marco all'Olmo, in Afragola (Metropolitan City of Naples), in the Casavico district, with processional moments towards the church of San Marco.
Afragola is easily accessible by car from the A1 motorway and the Asse Mediano; the city also has a High-Speed railway station (Napoli Afragola). By train or metro from Naples, you can reach the center via local connections.
Events in the square are free of charge. For updated dates and times, it is recommended to consult the Municipality of Afragola's portal.
