The city of Frattamaggiore celebrates its patron saint
The Patronal Feast of Saint Sossius the Martyr is the most anticipated event of the year for Frattamaggiore, a city in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. Saint Sossius, a deacon and martyr who lived in the 3rd century, is the city's patron saint. His relics are kept and venerated in the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Sossius the Deacon and Martyr, which overlooks Piazza Umberto I, the religious and civic heart of the town.
Every year, around September 23rd, the local community renews its devotion with days of celebrations that blend spiritual and popular traditions, involving the entire city and the many faithful who return for the occasion.
The religious core of the festival is marked by the novena in preparation for the saint's feast day, solemn masses celebrated in the Basilica, and above all, the procession of the reliquary bust of Saint Sossius. Accompanied by a brass band, confraternities, and a crowd of devotees, the procession winds through the main streets of the center. It is the most moving and well-attended moment, when the entire city pours into the streets to pay homage to its protector.
Alongside the liturgical celebrations, the Feast of Saint Sossius is also a grand popular festival. Piazza Umberto I is adorned with traditional illuminations and hosts concerts, musical performances, and entertainment, culminating in a fireworks display that closes the evenings. A place of honor is reserved for FrattaPizza, the gastronomic event organized by the Pro Loco in collaboration with the local Ascom, which celebrates pizza and the flavors of the Campanian territory.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Sossius is much more than a religious recurrence: it is a moment of collective identity where Frattamaggiore rediscovers its roots, history, and bond with the martyr saint. Promoted by the Municipality of Frattamaggiore together with the Pontifical Basilica and local associations, it attracts residents and former locals every year in a festive atmosphere that unites generations.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Sossius the Martyr takes place in Frattamaggiore starting in mid-September, with the patronal solemnity set as always for September 23rd. Spiritual preparation is entrusted to the novena and celebrations in the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Sossius, while Piazza Umberto I hosts the traditional civil events with music, shows, and the FrattaPizza organized by the Pro Loco.
