The winter feast of the Patron Saint of Marineo, in the heart of Sicilian religious tradition
Every year, on January 31st, the municipality of Marineo, a village in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, Sicily, gathers around its Patron Saint for the Feast of Saint Ciro the Martyr. The date commemorates the martyrdom of the Saint, a Christian physician and martyr killed in Alexandria, Egypt, in 303 AD during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. In Marineo, Saint Ciro is venerated with a popular fervor that has spanned centuries and manifests in two distinct moments of the year.
The locals call the January recurrence "Santu Ciru puvureddu", meaning "poor Saint Ciro", to contrast it with the grand summer feast in August, which is filled with lights, bands, and performances. The winter feast is, in fact, more sober and intimate: it consists exclusively of religious events, without external displays. Yet, in this very simplicity, many recognize the most authentic face of the devotion of Marineo.
Preparations begin many days in advance. The Saint's relic is removed from its niche and placed on the altar of the Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Ciro. From January 22nd to 30th, the novena takes place, animated each evening by a different parish group, featuring the recitation of the Saint Ciro rosary, confessions, and evening Holy Mass.
One of the most characteristic traditions is that of the "viaggi a santu Ciru": spontaneous pilgrimages that many faithful, in small groups, make in the evenings leading up to January 31st, reaching the church to fulfill a vow or ask for a grace. Some devotees walk barefoot as a promise, performing what is known in Marineo as the "viaggiu di San Ciru".
On January 31st, the bells ring out from the morning, while the drummers announce the solemn day through the streets of the town. Holy Masses follow throughout the day, culminating in the solemn evening Mass with the kissing of the relic. In the evening, the solemn procession carries the vara (float) through the streets, upon which the silver urn containing the Saint's relic stands, surrounded by the torches of the faithful.
Despite its simplicity, the January Feast of Saint Ciro represents one of the strongest identity markers for the community of Marineo. It is the occasion when the town rediscovers its roots and renews a bond of faith that links generations of locals to their Patron Saint, while awaiting the great summer feast.
The 2026 edition of "Santu Ciru puvureddu" was celebrated on Saturday, January 31st, preceded by the traditional novena from January 22nd to 30th, animated each evening by parish groups. The day of the 31st saw a succession of Holy Masses (at 9, 10, 11, 12 AM and in the afternoon), leading up to the solemn evening Mass with the kissing of the Saint Ciro relic. In the evening, the procession carried the float with the Saint's silver urn through the streets of Marineo, accompanied by the faithful and the drummers.
Celebrations take place at the Mother Church, seat of the Parish of S. Ciro and S. Giorgio Martiri, in Piazza S. Sigolene 1, Marineo (PA). The evening procession winds through the streets of the historic center.
Marineo is about 35 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the SS118; the regional capital is also connected by suburban bus lines. The nearest airport is Palermo "Falcone-Borsellino".
Participation in religious services and the procession is free and open to all.
