The patronal festival of Gangi, in the heart of the Madonie mountains
The Feast of Saint Catald is the patronal festival of Gangi, a stunning medieval village in the Madonie Park, perched on Mount Marone at an altitude of over 1,000 meters in the province of Palermo. Every year, around May 10th, the entire community gathers around its protector, renewing an ancient devotion that serves as a profound cultural and social expression of the town.
Saint Catald was a bishop of Taranto of Irish origin. According to tradition, he was shipwrecked on the Ionian coast of Puglia while returning from the Holy Land; guided toward Taranto, he led an intense evangelization effort there. He died between 475 and 480 and was buried in the church of San Giovanni in Galilea. The rediscovery of his tomb in 1071 marked the beginning of a cult that, thanks to the Normans, spread throughout Southern Italy and Sicily, reaching these high Madonie peaks.
The celebration is organized by the Confraternity of Maria SS. degli Agonizzanti and culminates in a Solemn Mass attended by the confreres and civil and military authorities. This is the moment when the Mayor pays homage to the patron saint by reciting the Act of Entrustment of the City of Gangi to Saint Catald.
The evening processions are particularly evocative, as the statue of the Saint is carried through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by numerous faithful, prayers, and the intimate atmosphere of the village alleys. The festival is not only religious; it includes shows, entertainment, and the traditional 'ntinna, a popular game that actively involves the entire community.
Gangi is one of the most scenic spots in the Madonie: awarded the title of one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and proclaimed Borgo dei Borghi in 2014, it features a maze of houses cascading down the slope to the Church of Saint Catald, which stands at the end of Corso Giuseppe Fedele Vitale with its characteristic majolica spire. The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the town's artistic heritage, from the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari to the panoramic views over the surrounding valleys.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Catald in Gangi was celebrated on May 9th and 10th, confirming the traditional calendar of the patronal festival. The program, organized by the Confraternity of Maria SS. degli Agonizzanti, included a Solemn Mass with the participation of civil and military authorities and the Act of Entrustment of the City recited by the Mayor.
The evenings were brought to life by processions of the Saint's statue along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful, as well as the usual popular festivities with shows and the traditional 'ntinna, in a village that ranks among the most beautiful in Italy.
Gangi can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tre Monzelli or Irosa exit), continuing along the state roads that cross the Madonie; the village is about two hours from Palermo. The nearest train station is Gangi-Sperlinga-Nicosia on the Palermo-Catania line, though it is located several kilometers from the town center.
Events take place in the historic center, around the Church of Saint Catald and along Corso Giuseppe Fedele Vitale. We recommend parking in the areas outside the village and walking up, wearing comfortable shoes due to the steep streets and high altitude (over 1,000 m).
