The San Vito Carnival: papier-mâché masks, community spirit, and inclusion
Farfugghji is the Carnival of San Vito dei Normanni, a town in the province of Brindisi, in the heart of Puglia. The event takes its name from its iconic symbol: a large papier-mâché character that has accompanied the festivities for years. It is rooted in the work of the Arcobaleno Cultural Association, which launched the event over twenty-five years ago. Today, the San Vito Carnival is promoted and coordinated directly by the Municipal Administration, in collaboration with local associations and cooperatives.
More than just a parade, Farfugghji is designed as a festival of hospitality and integration. Its organization involves the Hera Consortium and the Oasi social cooperative, which manage local reception projects, alongside the town's five parishes, local schools, and the local AVIS branch. The result is a day where children, families, guests of social projects, and citizens of all ages parade together, creating a truly participatory and popular Carnival.
The event takes place over a full Carnival Sunday. In the morning, Piazza Leonardo Leo hosts creative workshops for adults and children, dedicated to crafting masks and decorations. In the afternoon, the most anticipated moment begins: the masked parade, which winds through the main streets of the town center with costumed groups, confetti, and music, concluding with a final party and the awarding of the most festive groups.
The Carnival of San Vito dei Normanni is part of the rich Apulian tradition of masked festivals and the art of papier-mâché, typical of the Salento and Brindisi areas. The figure of Farfugghji, with its colors and irony, has become an identity symbol for the San Vito community over the years, drawing entire families to the square and passing on the spirit of popular celebration to the younger generations.
Free and open to everyone, Farfugghji is an ideal opportunity to discover San Vito dei Normanni in its most authentic and convivial form, amidst the atmosphere of Carnival, good local food, and the typical hospitality of Puglia. An event that combines fun, memory, and values of solidarity.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, San Vito dei Normanni hosted a new edition of its Carnival. The day began at 10:30 AM in Piazza Leonardo Leo with creative workshops for all ages, before moving into full swing in the afternoon: at 3:30 PM, the gathering took place, followed by the departure of the masked parade from Piazzale Louviers, behind the Local Police Headquarters.
The costumed groups paraded through the main streets of the town until the final celebration, featuring the awards ceremony, organized by AVIS, for the most beautiful and festive masked groups. The event was promoted by the Municipal Administration in collaboration with the Hera Consortium, the Oasi social cooperative, the town's five parishes, and local associations, confirming the spirit of community and integration that characterizes the San Vito Carnival.
San Vito dei Normanni is located in the province of Brindisi, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast. By car, it can be reached via the SS379 (Bari-Brindisi) and the provincial road network. The nearest train station is in San Vito dei Normanni on the Martina Franca-Lecce line, while the reference airports are Brindisi-Papola Casale and Bari-Palese.
Participation in the Farfugghji Carnival is free. Activities take place outdoors in Piazza Leonardo Leo and along the streets of the town center.
This event is suitable for families and children. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing for walking in the parade and, for those visiting from out of town, checking the exact dates on the official channels of the Municipality of San Vito dei Normanni.
