In the heart of summer, on July 16th, the White City of Ostuni, in the province of Brindisi, gathers around Our Lady of Mount Carmel for one of the most well-attended religious celebrations of the year. Devotion to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel is rooted in a long Marian tradition, safeguarded by the Confraternity of Mount Carmel and centered on the picturesque Church of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo in the city's historic center.
The day of July 16th begins with morning Holy Masses and culminates in the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Archbishop of Brindisi-Ostuni, during which new brothers and sisters are inducted into the confraternity. This is followed by the recitation of the Rosary and the Supplication to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a moment of deep spirituality for the faithful of Ostuni.
The most anticipated moment is the evening procession, when the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, topped by the historic processional pallium, travels through the main streets of Ostuni accompanied by the sound of a brass band. The Virgin of Mount Carmel is traditionally linked to the cult of the scapular, a symbol of Marian protection and devotion that characterizes this feast throughout Christendom.
Carmelite devotion is not limited to the city center: in the rural districts (contrade) of Ostuni, in the heart of the Itria Valleyโfrom Galante to Pascarosa, from San Salvatore to Cavallerizza, up to Chiobbica and MezzopreteโOur Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated with Masses, prayer gatherings, and popular initiatives that mark the Ostuni summer calendar.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers brass band performances, concerts in the square in front of the church, and traditional fireworks that light up the sky of the White City. It is an event that weaves together faith, folklore, and community identity, amidst the lime-washed alleys that make Ostuni one of the pearls of Puglia.
Perched on three hills and overlooking a plain of centuries-old olive trees, Ostuni is famous for its ancient town entirely whitewashed with lime. The Festival of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an ideal opportunity to discover the town's historic center, its religious heritage, and the hospitality of the Apulian community.
In 2026, Ostuni is once again preparing to celebrate Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a feast liturgically set for July 16th. At the moment, the Confraternity of Mount Carmel has not yet released the official program with the times for the Masses, the evening procession, and the civil festivities in the White City. This page will be updated as soon as the details for the 2026 edition are announced.
Ostuni can be reached by car via the SS16 Adriatica; the Ostuni railway station is on the Adriatic line (about 3 km from the center, connected by local buses). The nearest airports are Brindisi-Casale (approx. 35 km) and Bari-Palese (approx. 90 km).
Celebrations take place at the Church of Santa Maria del Monte Carmelo and along the streets of Ostuni's center, around July 16th. Participation is free and open to all.
During the summer, Ostuni is very busy: it is recommended to book accommodation in advance and to reach the historic center on foot, given the traffic restrictions during the procession.
