The city half marathon on the Strait, running between Piazza Duomo and Viale San Martino
The "Eufemio da Messina" Half Marathon is the road race that brings the center of the city on the Strait to life every year. The event takes place entirely within the Municipality of Messina, Sicily, on a traffic-free urban circuit that athletes complete multiple times. The flagship distance is the classic half marathon, 21.097 km, officially certified and recognized by FIDAL.
The event is not just for elite marathoners: the day includes several races designed to involve the entire city.
The route follows a 5.274 km loop that winds through the city center, touching Viale Garibaldi, Via dei Mille, and Viale San Martino, with a characteristic passage through Piazza Duomo. Shakespeare Run athletes complete the loop twice, while half marathoners repeat it four times. The start and finish lines are located in Piazza Unione Europea, in front of Palazzo Zanca, the city hall.
The event is organized by Polisportiva Odysseus Messina in collaboration with the municipal administration and with FIDAL recognition. The race awards the top three men and women in the overall standings, as well as the top three finishers in each FIDAL category. Over the years, the "Eufemio da Messina" has become a staple of the Sicilian running scene, attracting hundreds of athletes from across the region.
Running a half marathon in Messina means crossing one of Sicily's most scenic cities, overlooking the Strait and dominated by the Cathedral and its famous bell tower. The province of Messina, with its 19th-century boulevards and waterfront, provides an ideal urban backdrop for a road race that blends sport, tourism, and local identity.
The 2026 edition of the "Eufemio da Messina" Half Marathon took place on Sunday, January 11, 2026, with a start time of 8:30 AM from Piazza Unione Europea. After a forced hiatus the previous year, Polisportiva Odysseus Messina brought its signature race back to the streets.
The program brought together the half marathon (21.097 km), the Shakespeare Run (10.548 km), the Shakespeare Run โ Young for youth categories, and fitwalking. The course, partially modified from previous editions and completely closed to traffic, crossed Viale Garibaldi, Via dei Mille, and Viale San Martino, including a passage through Piazza Duomo, on a 5.274 km loop repeated four times for the half marathon and twice for the Shakespeare Run. Approximately 350 athletes took to the starting line.
The start is in Piazza Unione Europea, in the center of Messina, just a short walk from the Messina Centrale railway station (PalermoโMessina line and connections to the mainland via ferry). By car, the reference motorway exit is on the A20/A18 towards the city center; on race days, many central streets are closed to traffic.
Registrations are handled through the official channels of Polisportiva Odysseus Messina and timing portals. Fees vary based on the registration date: approximately โฌ22โ28 for the half marathon and โฌ12โ18 for the Shakespeare Run. Always check the regulations and deadlines on the official website.
As this is a winter race along the Strait, dress in layers and prepare for the mild but windy climate of the city center. It is advisable to arrive early to collect your bib and to park outside the traffic-restricted area.
