When December arrives, Rometta Marea—the coastal district overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Municipality of Rometta, within the Metropolitan City of Messina—lights up and gets into the festive spirit. Over the years, the Rometta Marea Christmas Markets have become one of the most popular holiday events on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, attracting families and curious visitors from across the region.
The heart of the event is the long row of wooden chalets—about forty in recent editions—winding along Corso Francesco Saija and near Piazza San Padre Pio. Here, local merchants and artisans display artistic objects, Christmas decorations, gift ideas, jewelry, and typical festive food and wine products. The event's stated goal has always been to promote local craftsmanship and foster direct interaction between producers and visitors.
One of the most beloved areas is the one dedicated to street food: in the past, it has covered about a thousand square meters, offering tastings of wood-fired pizza, fried pizza, porchetta, and traditional Messina dishes, not to mention typical sweets. A large marquee with tables and chairs allows visitors to enjoy everything in comfort, sheltered from the cold.
Beyond shopping and gastronomy, the markets offer entertainment and creative workshops for children, meetings with Christmas characters, and fun for all ages. The atmosphere evokes that of traditional markets in Northern Italy and Central Europe, yet reinterpreted with the artisanal and gastronomic peculiarities of Sicily: a Mediterranean Christmas that blends lights, music, and local flavors.
The event has been held for several years and represents an important opportunity for socialization and promotion for the small coastal village of Rometta Marea during the holiday season.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Rometta Marea Christmas Markets have not yet been published. The markets take place in Rometta Marea (postal code 98043), a coastal district of the Municipality of Rometta (ME), along Corso Francesco Saija and in the area of Piazza San Padre Pio.
