The car slalom race winding through the hills of the Messina province
The Torregrotta-Roccavaldina Slalom is a historic fixture on the Sicilian motorsport calendar. The race takes place along the Provincial Road 59, which links the towns of Torregrotta and Roccavaldina, in the province of Messina, in the heart of north-eastern Sicily. The course, approximately 3.5 kilometers long, winds through hairpins, curves, and short straights with an average gradient of around 7%, featuring thirteen slowdown zones marked by cones, the hallmark of slalom racing.
The first edition was held on August 11, 1996, thanks to a group of motorsport enthusiasts from Torregrotta. Since then, the race has grown to become one of the most anticipated events in the discipline in Southern Italy. Since 2005, the event has been part of the Italian Slalom Championship (CIS), cementing its national prestige. The organization is managed by ASD Top Competition of Torregrotta, in collaboration with the Automobile Club Messina and with the support of the two municipalities involved.
The slalom brings together a diverse range of vehicles, from modified hatchbacks to single-seaters and extreme prototypes, divided into numerous classes and groups. Each competitor tackles the track over several timed heats, and the sum of the best times determines the final standings. Over time, specialists of the discipline have made their mark on the Torregrotta-Roccavaldina track: drivers like Luigi Vinaccia and Fabio Emanuele are among the most successful in the event's history, with six victories each.
Beyond the competition, the Torregrotta-Roccavaldina Slalom is a major draw for the entire region. On race days, spectators line the course to follow the action, while the towns of Roccavaldina and Torregrotta come alive with the service park, technical inspections, and award ceremonies. For motorsport fans, it is also an opportunity to discover a corner of the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, nestled between the Peloritani mountains and the sea, during a mild and pleasant time of year.
The Torregrotta-Roccavaldina Slalom returns in 2026 for its thirty-first edition, confirmed by the official calendar for the weekend of October 10 and 11. Technical inspections and practice sessions will take place on Saturday, while the timed race heats are scheduled for Sunday, October 11, along the 3.5 kilometers of the SP59. The race is valid for the National Slalom Championship and the Sicilian regional championship. The entry list, detailed schedule, and full program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The race takes place along Provincial Road 59 between Torregrotta and Roccavaldina, in the province of Messina (Sicily). Roccavaldina (ZIP 98040) is located a short distance from the Tyrrhenian coast.
By car: A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at Milazzo or Rometta, then follow provincial roads towards the inland hills. By train: Torregrotta-Roccavaldina station on the Tyrrhenian line, just a few minutes from the town center.
During practice sessions and the race, the SP59 is closed to regular traffic: it is recommended to check local municipal ordinances and follow the organization's signs for parking and spectator areas.
