The great celebration of Gangi's peasant culture, featuring the Procession of Demeter and the Burgisi Feast
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ear of Wheat Festival and Burgisi Feast is the signature event of Gangi, a stunning medieval village perched in the Madonie mountains in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Recognized as part of the regional Sicilian calendar of "noble and peasant traditions," the festival re-enacts the customs, rituals, and culture of past rural life, blending them with pagan cults of Mother Goddesses—protectors of the earth's fertility—and specifically the myth of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest.
The first edition of the Ear of Wheat Festival dates back to 1964, initiated by the Pro Loco of Gangi with the patronage of the Municipality. The festival grew from the "Festa della Matricola" singing group and has progressively expanded its historical and folkloric content, becoming a major attraction for the entire Madonie region. The highlight, known since 1998 as the Procession of Demeter, is a historical pageant featuring over two hundred costumed participants, showcasing the wheat cycle and ancient propitiatory rites linked to the land.
The Procession of Demeter is the most spectacular moment of the event: a grand historical and folkloric parade that winds through the charming squares of Gangi (Piazza San Paolo, Piazza del Popolo, Viale delle Rimembranze), attracting thousands of visitors. The event is artistically directed by a local filmmaker and accompanied by folk group performances and popular music concerts. In recent years, the festival has been enhanced by the Memories and Traditions ethno-gastronomic route, created in collaboration with Slow Food Sicily, dedicated to typical Madonie products.
Visiting Gangi during the Ear of Wheat Festival means discovering one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, awarded the title of "Borgo dei Borghi," and immersing yourself in an authentic atmosphere of rural traditions, local dialect, Madonie gastronomy, and popular sacredness. The event is organized by Pro Loco Gangi APS and supported by the Municipality of Gangi and the Sicilian Region.
The 2026 edition of the Ear of Wheat Festival and Burgisi Feast in Gangi (province of Palermo) marks the 61st edition of the event. Official dates and the detailed program have not yet been published: the Pro Loco Gangi APS has announced that the 2026 program will be released soon. As every year, the traditional highlights of the festival are expected — from the Procession of Demeter to the Burgisi Feast, from the Manciata di novi così to the re-enactments of peasant life — with the Madonie village as the main stage. It is recommended to check the official Pro Loco channels for confirmed dates.
Gangi is located in the heart of the Madonie, in the province of Palermo. By car: take the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, exit at Tre Monzelli or Irosa, then follow the SS120 towards Gangi. By train: arrive at Catania or Palermo stations, then take local bus connections to the Madonie.
The festival traditionally takes place in the first ten days of August, around the second Sunday of the month.
The festival and events in the squares are free and open to the public.
