The urban trail and walking event connecting the Castello della Manta and the Castello di Verzuolo
The Due Castelli Urban Trail & Two Castles Walk is a spring running event held in Manta, a town in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont. The concept behind the event is simple yet captivating: to unite two of the most significant historic residences in the Saluzzo area, the Castello della Manta and the Castello di Verzuolo, via a route that traverses parks, vineyards, and hilly paths.
The race kicks off from Piazza del Popolo in the heart of Manta, right in front of the Town Hall. From there, the two routes wind toward the hills separating Manta from Verzuolo, alternating between urban stretches, dirt roads, and panoramic passages through the grounds of these historic estates.
The Castello della Manta is one of the most famous properties managed by the FAI (National Trust of Italy): its Baronial Hall houses an extraordinary cycle of late-Gothic frescoes depicting the Nine Worthies and Nine Heroines, a masterpiece of early 15th-century painting in Northern Italy. The Castello di Verzuolo, overlooking the Saluzzo plains, completes the itinerary, offering participants views and access to parklands that are usually closed to the public. The race thus becomes an opportunity to showcase the historical and landscape heritage of these two villages.
The event is the result of a collaboration between the organizers and the Podistica Valle Varaita association, with the support of the municipalities of Manta and Verzuolo. The first edition, held in April 2026, attracted over a thousand participants across both the race and the walk, highlighting the strong bond between the Cuneo running community and this corner of Piedmont. All registered participants receive the traditional runner's lunch, while tours of the castles are available separately.
Included in the regional calendar, the Due Castelli Urban Trail combines the competitive spirit of the FIDAL Piedmont urban trail championship with the convivial atmosphere of the open walk. It is an event that tells the story of the Saluzzo area through its hills, its castles, and a passion for running.
The debut of the Due Castelli Urban Trail was a great success: over 1000 participants in total, including approximately 421 in the 14 km competitive race (500 m D+) and 609 in the 8 km walk. The start was from Piazza del Popolo in Manta at 9:30 AM for competitors and 10:00 AM for walkers.
The race was valid as the FIDAL Piedmont regional championship for urban trail, in both absolute and master categories. Among the men, Bernard Dematteis (Pod. Valle Varaita) triumphed in 55:39, ahead of Fabio Griglio (Atl. Saluzzo) and Stefano Giordano (ASD Dragonero). In the women's category, victory went to Rachele Cremonini (Pod. Valle Varaita) in 1h04:20, followed by Enrica Dematteis and Liviana Mandrile.
The course crossed the park of the Castello della Manta and the grounds of the Castello di Verzuolo. All participants were offered the runner's lunch.
By car: Manta can be reached from the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Marene exit) or via the main road to Saluzzo; the town center is just a few minutes from Saluzzo. Parking is available near Piazza del Popolo.
By train: The reference station is Saluzzo, which is connected to Savigliano and the Piedmontese regional network; from there, you can continue by bus or taxi to Manta.
Registration is available online at www.irunning.it. The meeting point, bib collection, and event village are located in Piazza del Popolo in Manta. The competitive urban trail starts at 9:30 AM, and the walk starts at 10:00 AM.
For the competitive race, trail shoes are recommended due to the dirt and hilly sections. The walk is suitable for families. We suggest combining your day with a visit to the Castello della Manta (FAI).
