Music, theatre, and literature in the historic center of Riano, leading up to the Teatro nelle Cave festival
Dal Borgo alle Cave is the cultural festival that officially kicks off the summer performance season in Riano. Created as a "prequel" to the more famous Teatro nelle Cave, the event brings music, theatre, and literature into the heart of the historic center before audiences move to the spectacular tuff quarries that have made the town famous. It is a simple and beloved formula: a few evenings, all free, in locations that need no set design because the village itself is the stage.
The heart of the festival is the Castello Baronale Boncompagni-Ludovisi, the building that dominates the ancient core of Riano and whose courtyard welcomes the public on summer evenings. Over the years, performances have also been held in Piazza Piombino, the open-air living room of the historic center, reachable on foot after a short climb through alleys and tuff arches. In both cases, the atmosphere is that of a cozy Lazio village: chairs set up outdoors, the audience arriving early, and a show that begins just as the sun sets.
The programming is intentionally diverse and designed for a wide audience. A prominent place is reserved for the Santa Cecilia Conservatory Wind Orchestra of Rome, which is now a regular presence in Riano, featuring young instrumentalists directed by conservatory masters. Alongside the concerts, there is space for comedy theatre and dramatic readings, featuring contemporary texts and educational pieces, as well as costume performances by the local company Carpe Diem Castrum Riani. In some editions, the festival has also hosted evenings of lyric opera, with soloists from the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale performing works by Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, and Leoncavallo.
Riano is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, just over twenty kilometers from the capital, in an area of tuff hills included in the Veio Regional Park. The tuff stone itself, extracted for centuries, left behind the quarries that now host the summer theatre festival: an industrial heritage site converted into a cultural space, with illuminated tuff walls and the starry sky instead of a ceiling. Dal Borgo alle Cave tells the first half of this story, the one that still takes place among the village houses.
The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Riano with the Associazione Teatro nelle Cave ETS, in collaboration with the Santa Cecilia Conservatory and local associations. Admission to all events is free; for some evenings, reservations are required due to the limited size of the venues.
Four evenings, all free, accompanied Riano towards the 19th edition of Teatro nelle Cave. The Castello Baronale Boncompagni-Ludovisi hosted two concerts by the Santa Cecilia Conservatory Wind Orchestra of Rome, a comedy show, and a theatrical reading of an educational nature, in a program designed to alternate between different styles and audiences.
The opening on June 28 and the closing on July 5 were entrusted to the young instrumentalists of the Roman conservatory, directed by Gianfilippo Pocorobba and Antonio Pelizza respectively. In between, on July 3, Marco Capretti took the stage with "Stanno in mezzo a noi", while on July 4, Riccardo Bocci presented "MANIAC", a theatrical reading based on Benjamin Labatut's book dedicated to the scientist who contributed to the birth of the computer, the atomic bomb, and artificial intelligence.
The festival was organized by the Municipality of Riano together with the Associazione Teatro nelle Cave ETS. Admission to all events was free.
All events took place in the setting of the Castello Baronale Boncompagni-Ludovisi, in Riano.
By car from Rome: Take Via Flaminia or Via Tiberina to Riano, about 25 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare. The historic center has restricted traffic: park in the lower part of the town and walk up. In some editions, a shuttle service has been provided from Largo G. Falcone and P. Borsellino to the entrance of the historic center. By train: Roma Nord station or regional lines towards Morlupo/Riano, then local bus.
All performances are free of charge. For some evenings, reservations are mandatory: call or WhatsApp 379 2746563 (from 10 AM to 2 PM). Information: Culture Office of the Municipality of Riano, tel. +39 06 901373318, [email protected].
Performances generally start at 9 PM. It is advisable to arrive at least half an hour early to find a seat. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone climbs of the village and bring a light sweater: on early July evenings in the hills, the temperature drops. After the show, the local establishments in the center remain open for a late dinner or a gelato in the square.
