A theatre carved into tuff

A few kilometres from Rome, in the heart of the Veio Park, the village of Riano hides a venue unlike any other stage in Lazio: the ancient tuff quarries, still partially active today, which are transformed every summer into an open-air amphitheatre with a stage, dressing rooms, and tiered seating. The vertical walls of volcanic stone, illuminated at dusk, provide natural acoustics and a backdrop that no set designer could replicate. This is the home of Teatro nelle Cave, the most iconic cultural event of the municipality, located within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital.

A festival that has grown over time

Born as a local initiative and gradually establishing itself as a benchmark for the entire area north of the capital, the festival is organized by the Municipality of Riano in collaboration with the Teatro nelle Cave di Tufo Association, with support from local partners. In 2026, it reaches its 19th edition, scheduled from July 20th to 30th: a milestone that testifies to the resilience of a project built on volunteer work, community participation, and programming that has never compromised on quality.

A programme that spans genres

The formula of Teatro nelle Cave is intentionally multidisciplinary: alongside the great classics of Italian drama, there is space for concerts, musical tributes, and cinema under the stars. Past editions have featured works by Pirandello, Goldoni, Machiavelli, and Plautus, dramatic readings dedicated to Italo Calvino, tributes to Neapolitan song and singer-songwriter music, opera evenings with young singers, and film screenings. The audience is composed of families, theatre enthusiasts, and curious visitors who travel to the quarries from neighbouring towns.

Free admission, a core choice

One of the festival's hallmarks is that all events are free of charge, maintained year after year thanks to the contribution of the Municipality and local sponsors. It is a deliberate choice: to make quality theatre accessible to everyone, in a context where summer culture often risks being confined to major urban centres. The box office, which opens in the late afternoon on performance days, is used solely to assign seats, while reservations are collected by phone in the preceding weeks.

Riano and the Veio Park

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Riano, a village in the Roman countryside overlooking the Tiber Valley, with its castle and the maze of alleys in the historic centre. Much of the municipal territory falls within the Veio Regional Park Authority, a protected area of gorges, woods, and Etruscan remains that is perfect for hikes and visits on the day before the evening show. For many, the combination of a walk in nature, dinner in the village, and theatre in the quarries is the best way to experience the festival.
