The patronal feast of Formello: processions, live music, and fireworks in the heart of the Lazio summer

The Festival of the Patron Saints San Lorenzo and San Prudenzio is the most anticipated summer event in Formello, a village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, overlooking the Veio Park just a few kilometers from the capital. Every year, around August 10th, the feast day of Saint Lawrence, the historic center is transformed: lights decorate the streets, market stalls line the path from Piazza Donato Palmieri to Viale Umberto I, and the Municipal Gardens become a large open-air stage.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession with the statues of the patron saints through the village streets, accompanied by illuminated fountains and an atmosphere that brings the entire community together. Saint Lawrence, a Roman martyr celebrated on August 10th, shares the patronage of Formello with Saint Prudenzio: a devotional bond that has marked the town's calendar for generations. Liturgical celebrations in the parish church precede and accompany the secular program, in a blend typical of Lazio's patronal feasts.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival traditionally offers a program of five nights of live music and free entertainment. The stage in the Municipal Gardens has hosted well-known names in Italian music over the years, while Piazza San Lorenzo hosts the concert of the town's marching band, one of the most iconic moments of the event. The program also includes:
Throughout the festivities, the streets of the center host food and craft stalls: porchetta, traditional Lazio sweets, local products from the Agro Veientano, and hobbyist stands accompany the evening stroll. It is the perfect opportunity to discover, along with the festival, the cuisine of this corner of the Roman countryside still largely untouched by mass tourism.
Visitors arriving for the festival will find an Etruscan-origin village built on a tuff spur, dominated by Palazzo Chigi, which houses the Agro Veientano Museum. Surrounding it is the Veio Regional Park, with its trails, wooded gorges, and the sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo. The combination of popular celebration, historical heritage, and nature makes the Patron Saints Festival an authentic experience less than half an hour from Rome.
Admission to all shows is free, making the Formello patronal feast an ideal destination for families and those looking for the genuine flavor of Lazio village festivals during the Ferragosto week. The evenings continue late into the night, when the sky of San Lorenzo, filled with fireworks and shooting stars, brings the festival most loved by the locals to a close.
On August 10, 2026, Formello honors San Lorenzo, patron saint of the village along with San Prudenzio. As every year, festivities animating the historic center of the Agro Veientano, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, are concentrated around this date.
The structure of the festival is well-established: procession with the statues of the saints along the illuminated streets, marching band concert in Piazza San Lorenzo, evenings of music and entertainment on the stage of the Municipal Gardens, animation and cinema for children, a footrace, and fireworks to close the festivities. Food and craft stalls accompany the days from Piazza Donato Palmieri to Viale Umberto I.
Admission to all shows is free. The full program, including times and artist names, will be published by the Municipality of Formello in the weeks preceding the festival on the official website and official poster.
By car from Rome: Via Cassia bis (SS 2 bis Veientana), exit Formello, about 25 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare. By train: FL3 Rome-Viterbo line, Sacrofano or La Giustiniana station, then Cotral bus to Formello. Nearest airport: Rome Fiumicino (about 50 km).
All shows in Piazza San Lorenzo and the Municipal Gardens are free to attend. Evenings generally begin around 7:00 PM, with main concerts starting around 9:30 PM.
The historic center is closed to traffic during the festivities: it is advisable to leave your car in the external parking lots and continue on foot. For those wishing to stay overnight, farmhouses and bed and breakfasts can be found in the area of Formello, Campagnano di Roma, and Sacrofano.
