The historic Cumiana Carnival featuring the Frutasè and Frutasera masks
Every winter, the town of Cumiana, located in the Province of Turin at the foot of the Pinerolo valleys in Piedmont, rallies around its Carnival: one of the most cherished local festivals in the region, drawing thousands of people to its streets. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Cumiana, which has spent years curating the parade, the entertainment, and the ritual that defines the event's identity.
The absolute stars are the traditional Cumiana masks, Frutasè and Frutasera: two figures who embody the community's agricultural roots, linked to the fruit cultivation and trade that have historically shaped the local economy. On the day of the festival, the mayor symbolically hands them the keys to the town, marking the official start of the celebrations. Each year, new performers take on the roles of the two masks, often chosen from citizens connected to the local agricultural world.
The most spectacular moment is the grand Carnival parade, which winds through the town center to Piazza Martiri III Aprile. The procession brings together:
The day is enriched with themed areas, entertainment, and activities dedicated to children, also curated by the Circo Wow association, which transforms the square into a large playground for families.
The gastronomic aspect is not to be missed: the Pro Loco sets up a refreshment area with seasonal specialties, including the essential apple fritters and hot chocolate, perfect for warming up during the cold Piedmontese winter days. In some editions, the festival continues with a musical after-party, closing a day entirely dedicated to tradition and fun for all of Cumiana.
The heart of the Carnival is Piazza Martiri III Aprile in Cumiana (TO), with the parade passing through the town center streets.
By car: Cumiana can be reached via the SP589 from Pinerolo or Turin; during the parade days, road closures and parking bans are expected along the route. By train: the reference station is Pinerolo, with a connecting bus service. It is recommended to arrive early and park outside the center.
Access to the event is free. Any purchases at the Pro Loco refreshment stand are paid.
