A re-enactment of the ancient threshing ritual among the masserie of Noci
Some events do more than just entertain; they safeguard the memory of an entire region. "Covoni e Tradizioni" is one of them: in the countryside of Noci, in the province of Bari, the festival revives the farming world of the Apulian hinterland through a faithful re-enactment of the ancient threshing ritual, the final stage of the harvest used to separate grain from straw. It is a deep dive into the civilization of the masserie, when the rhythm of the day was dictated by field work and the sound of the siren calling laborers to the fields.
The heart of the event is the historical reconstruction of work on the threshing floor: stacked haystacks, vintage agricultural machines brought back to life, and the ancient art of threshing. The Terre delle Noci association, which organizes the event, has always focused on customs—both old and new—linked to the agricultural and livestock world, aiming to promote not only farming knowledge but also the rural architecture that dots the Noci countryside, much of which is now at risk of abandonment. It is no coincidence that the event has chosen exceptional settings over the years, such as Villa Scozia and Masseria Vecchia Mastro Marco.
Alongside the re-enactment, "Covoni e Tradizioni" offers in-depth sessions that bridge the past and future of agriculture: thematic talks on ancient grains and local varieties, meetings on technological innovation in farming, and drone demonstrations. To complete the experience, there are tastings of local products, including bread, orecchiette, and cheeses, in a culinary journey that tells the story of the most authentic Puglia.
The festival is also designed for children and families, with numerous workshops: from making orecchiette and mozzarella to weaving baskets, creating harvest amulets, and exploring the bee garden. It is a way to pass on gestures and crafts to new generations that might otherwise be lost. Evenings conclude with live music, featuring concerts and folk dances under the sky of the Noci countryside.
Located on the south-eastern Murgia, between the Itria Valley and the Murgian plateau, Noci is one of the most characteristic towns in the Province of Bari, famous for its historic center with lime-washed alleys and a landscape scattered with masserie, jazzi, and trulli. "Covoni e Tradizioni" fits perfectly into this rural identity and is part of the "Estate Nocese" program, the season of events that enlivens the town from June to October.
After previous editions, "Covoni e Tradizioni" comes back to life thanks to the commitment of the Terre delle Noci association, bringing the great collective ritual of threshing back to the countryside. An event that speaks of identity, community, and the deep bond between Puglia and its land.
The 2026 edition of "Covoni e Tradizioni" is held for the first time at Masseria Palazzi, along the provincial road to Massafra, in the Noci (BA) countryside. The Terre delle Noci association weaves the historical re-enactment of threshing with thematic talks, live music, local products, and workshops for adults and children. A program that combines farming memory with reflection on the future of agriculture, between ancient grains and new technologies.
The 2026 edition takes place at Masseria Palazzi, along the provincial road to Massafra, in the Noci (BA) countryside. In previous editions, the event was held at Villa Scozia and Masseria Vecchia Mastro Marco.
Noci can be reached by car via the SS 172 dei Trulli (Noci exit) and the SP road to Massafra. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airports are Bari-Palese and Brindisi. The masseria is located in the open countryside: arriving by car is recommended.
Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th, 2026, opening in the late afternoon and continuing into the evening.
A popular, community-based event with free access. It is recommended to check for any updates on the Terre delle Noci association's channels and the Estate Nocese program.
