Artistic illuminations, Christmas markets, and living nativity scenes in the heart of the Valle d'Itria

Every year, as the holidays approach, the historic center of Locorotondo—a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of the Valle d'Itria—lights up to become The Village of Wonders. The characteristic maze of white 'cummerse' houses, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, provides a natural backdrop for a widespread Christmas celebration featuring artistic illuminations, markets, shows, and folk traditions.
The hub of activity is Piazza Aldo Moro, the arrival point of a pedestrian route connecting the main streets of the village. The illuminations extend along Porta Nuova, Via Morelli, Via Montanaro, Via Bruno, Via Eroi Dogali, and Via Nardelli, lighting up the alleys every evening with installations that draw visitors from all over Puglia.
The Christmas season brings Christmas markets, spread across Piazza Aldo Moro, the municipal park, and the streets adjacent to the Town Hall. The stalls feature local artisans, food and wine producers, and handmade Christmas decorations. Traditional Apulian specialties are a must: cartellate, purcidduzzi, mostaccioli, and orecchiette, paired with the local DOC white wine of Locorotondo and the region's extra virgin olive oil.
Among the most cherished events are the living nativity scenes, which bring the districts and farmhouses around the town to life during December and early January. These representations, organized by local parishes and associations, tell the story of the Nativity while immersing the public in the trades and customs of the past.
The festive calendar is enriched with concerts, wandering bands, bagpipers, street performers, children's workshops, and themed evenings like the evocative Night of the Candles. This program accompanies residents and visitors from the lighting of the illuminations until the Epiphany, making Locorotondo a premier Christmas destination in the Valle d'Itria, alongside nearby Alberobello, Cisternino, and Martina Franca.
Strolling through the historic center of Locorotondo during the holidays means moving through lights, the scent of mulled wine and hot chocolate, music, and small performances at every corner. The intimate atmosphere of the village, combined with the beauty of its white architecture, makes this event particularly suitable for families and those seeking an authentic Christmas away from the big cities. Admission to public spaces and the light displays is free.
The 2026 edition of Locorotondo Christmas – The Village of Wonders has not yet been officially announced. Based on previous editions, the Christmas lights and markets are expected to enliven the historic center from the second half of November until the Epiphany, with concerts, children's workshops, and living nativity scenes in the surrounding districts. The dates and detailed program will be published by the Municipality of Locorotondo closer to the holidays.
Locorotondo is located in the heart of the Valle d'Itria, in the province of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS172 dei Trulli road. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est line (Locorotondo station). The nearest airports are Bari Palese and Brindisi.
The illuminations are generally active every evening starting from late afternoon; the markets observe continuous hours on weekends and public holidays. Access to the historic center, the light displays, and the markets is free. Some living nativity scene performances may request a voluntary donation.
Municipal Info-point: +39 080 431 2788. We recommend reaching the village on foot by leaving your car in the parking lots outside the historic center, especially on weekends and during peak days.
