The Gargano road race blending sport, legality, and tradition
CorriCagnano has become a staple of the Apulian spring running calendar. It takes place in Cagnano Varano, a village overlooking the lake of the same name in the heart of the northern Gargano, in the province of Foggia. The event, known as the "Salvatore Speradio" Memorial, is more than just a 9.9 km race: it is a local festival that brings together athletes, families, and young people under the banner of the slogan "Run for Legality."
Cagnano Varano sits on the shores of Lake Varano, the largest coastal lagoon in Italy, in a part of the Gargano that weaves together nature, fishing, and ancient traditions. Running here means traversing a route that showcases both the town center and the surrounding landscape, with the start and finish line in the heart of the village, in Piazza Giannone, along Corso Giannone and the Villa Comunale.
The motto "Run for Legality" gives CorriCagnano a value that goes beyond the stopwatch: the event promotes themes of citizenship and respect for rules among the youth, turning sport into an educational vehicle. This is complemented by a culinary focus: the race pack reserved for early registrants includes the renowned Cozze di Cagnano (Cagnano mussels), a local lagoon delicacy, along with a technical t-shirt.
CorriCagnano is organized by A.S.D. Pegaso and is part of the Grand Prix Capitanata Terra dell'Atletica circuit, serving as one of its seasonal stages. This makes it a highly anticipated event not only for the runners of Cagnano Varano but for all athletes in the province of Foggia and Puglia, who come here to compete on a fast and smooth course.
CorriCagnano perfectly captures the spirit of great local races: sport, community, memory, and a love for the land, from the Gargano to the table.
The 14th CorriCagnano brought Cagnano Varano to life over the weekend of April 11-12, 2026, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated stages of the Capitanata running circuit. The event, valid as the 2nd stage of the 2026 Grand Prix Capitanata Terra dell'Atletica, combined competition, popular participation, and the promotion of the Gargano territory.
The program opened on Saturday with youth races in Piazza Giannone and concluded on Sunday with the 9.9 km competitive race and the non-competitive walk open to all. The focus on legality and the promotion of the Cozze di Cagnano, included in the race pack, remained central to the event.
