The Corpus Domini floral carpet in front of the Mother Church

In the small town of Bolognetta, in the province of Palermo, the solemnity of Corpus Domini is one of the most deeply felt events of the year. For the occasion, the community creates an infiorata: a carpet of petals, flowers, and ornamental motifs spread along the town's streets and in front of the Mother Church, over which the Eucharistic procession passes. It is a stunning example of ephemeral art that blends religious devotion, creativity, and community participation, in the finest tradition of Sicilian flower festivals.
The Bolognetta Flower Festival is part of a broader tradition that characterizes the towns of the Eleuterio and Busambra valleys: the neighboring towns of Marineo and Villafrati also create their own floral carpets for Corpus Domini, giving life to a busy calendar of events throughout June. In Bolognetta, the petals form sacred scenes and decorative patterns that, for a few hours, transform the cobblestones of the historic center into a grand collective masterpiece.
In Bolognetta, the Corpus Domini festivities are intertwined with those dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, who is highly venerated in the town. Alongside the procession and the floral carpet, there are cultural and popular moments: performances with living tableaux, screenings, and meetings organized by the local parish, associations, and civic groups. In the 2025 edition, in front of the Mother Church, the program featured the performance The Life of Saint Anthony of Padua with moving living tableaux in Piazza Matrice (Giovanni Paolo II) and the screening of the video La Spartenza, by Salvo Guttilla, in Piazza Caduti in Guerra.
Visiting the Bolognetta Flower Festival means discovering the most genuine side of inland Sicily, far from the major tourist flows: a village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo where the Corpus Domini tradition is still lived by the entire community. The intimate atmosphere, the vibrant colors of the flowers, and the bond with the feast of Saint Anthony make this event a moment of strong local identity.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival in Bolognetta have not yet been announced. As every year, the event is expected to take place in June, coinciding with the solemnity of Corpus Domini, featuring the creation of the floral carpet in front of the Mother Church and the Eucharistic procession through the streets of the historic center. The detailed program will be communicated by the Municipality of Bolognetta and the parish in the weeks preceding the event.
Bolognetta is located in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, along the SS 121 state road. By car from Palermo, it can be reached in about 30-40 minutes via the A19 motorway (Villabate exit) and the SS 121 towards Agrigento.
The heart of the event is the Mother Church and the historic center, with the floral carpet laid along the main streets and cultural events held in Piazza Matrice (Giovanni Paolo II) and Piazza Caduti in Guerra.
The event is held in June, coinciding with the solemnity of Corpus Domini. Dates vary from year to year according to the liturgical calendar.
Access to the flower festival and public events is free.
