Ciociaria's rural heritage comes to life in Ruscito
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Corn Husking and Shelling Festival takes place every late summer in Ruscito, a rural district of Piedimonte San Germano in the province of Frosinone, located in the heart of the Ciociaria region of Lazio. This is no ordinary village fair; it is a genuine re-enactment of vintage agricultural labor, meticulously organized each year by volunteers from the "Gli Amici della Campagna" Cultural Movement, with the patronage of the local administration.
Corn, the crop that sustained generations of families in the Liri Valley and the Cassinate area, is the absolute star. Husking (removing the husks from the cob) and shelling (detaching the kernels from the cob) were once collective tasks performed in the farmyard in the evening, accompanied by songs and stories—the festival perfectly recreates that atmosphere.
The opening ceremony features the traditional hand-cutting of the pennacchio (corn tassel), a gesture that officially kicks off the festivities. Immediately after, the event's most photographed moment takes place: the parade of vintage agricultural machinery as it travels through the district to the exhibition field.
Volunteer-run food stalls offer recipes from the local peasant kitchen, the same dishes prepared during the harvest days of old. Polenta with vegetables, served as part of the classic "1960s-style lunch," is the signature dish, accompanied by typical Ciociarian products and finished in the evening with the traditional cocomerata (watermelon feast) offered to all attendees.
The program alternates between historical re-enactment and festive celebration. Evenings are enlivened by folk music bands and orchestras, with dancing under the stars for all ages. A dedicated area for children offers games and workshops focused on the agricultural world, while Sunday morning is reserved for the rural mass held outdoors and the blessing of the agricultural machinery, a moment of deep community identity.
The event also hosts conferences: over the years, the festival has held meetings on topics vital to local farmers, ranging from water shortages to the presence of wild boars in the countryside.
Piedimonte San Germano is located just a few kilometers from Cassino and its famous Abbey of Montecassino. The festival is the perfect opportunity to combine a visit to one of southern Lazio's most well-known landmarks with an authentic, grassroots, and free experience far from the usual tourist circuits. Visitors from outside the region will find a sincere portrait of the rural civilization of lower Lazio, told by those who truly lived it.
The event, which reached its fifteenth edition in 2025, attracts hundreds of visitors every year from across the province of Frosinone and the nearby Terra di Lavoro.
At the time of writing, no official announcement has been published regarding the 2026 edition of the Corn Husking and Shelling Festival in Piedimonte San Germano, in the province of Frosinone.
Based on the custom of recent years—the fifteenth edition took place on August 30 and 31, 2025, and the fourteenth on August 24 and 25, 2024—it is reasonable to expect the event to be held between late August and early September, again in Ruscito. The dates provided here are an indication based on this periodicity and not a confirmation.
It is recommended to check the final dates and program with the "Gli Amici della Campagna" Cultural Movement or the Municipality of Piedimonte San Germano in the weeks preceding the event.
