The last Saturday of April at the Capuchin Convent in Rodi Garganico
In the heart of the Gargano, the village of Rodi Garganico, in the Province of Foggia, preserves one of the oldest and most beloved religious traditions in all of northern Puglia. Every last Saturday of April, the local community gathers around the Beata Vergine Maria Incoronata for the so-called "Convent Festival," an event that blends devotion, nature, and conviviality into a single spring day.
The heart of the festival is the procession during which the statue of the Madonna Incoronata reaches the church of the Convento dello Spirito Santo dei Cappuccini. The celebration is preceded by a three-day preparation period (triduum) at the sanctuary of Maria SS. della Libera, the patron saint of Rodi Garganico. On the Saturday of the festival, the traditional program includes the Holy Rosary in the morning, a solemn mass in the convent church, and at noon, the solemn blessing of the city, the fields, and the sea—a gesture that encapsulates the agricultural and maritime soul of this Gargano village.
The origins of the convent date back to 1538, making it one of the oldest in the so-called "monastic region of the Angel," which spans the Capitanata and Molise areas. Over the centuries, it served as a novitiate and home to numerous religious figures. Popular devotion is deeply intertwined with local history: during the Napoleonic period, the people of Rodi found refuge for months with the Capuchin friars, protected from the dangers of guerrilla warfare. Since then, the bond between the town and the convent has never been broken, and the last Saturday of April is its most vivid testimony.
Beyond its religious value, the Convent Festival is above all a great popular celebration. Families from Rodi head up to the convent to spend the entire day immersed in nature, enjoying traditional wholesome open-air lunches and Gargano melodies that fill the afternoon. There is no shortage of musical moments, such as concerts dedicated to the Madonna, and games for all ages, creating an atmosphere of serene conviviality that makes this day a true collective ritual.
Overlooking the Adriatic Sea and nestled among the citrus groves of the Gargano, Rodi Garganico is one of the most evocative destinations on the Foggia coast. The Convent Festival offers residents and visitors the chance to discover the village at its most authentic moment of the year, when spring colors the countryside and tradition brings the entire community together around its Madonna. It is an experience that weaves together spirituality, landscape, and Puglian identity.
Faithful to a centuries-old custom, on April 25, 2026, Rodi Garganico celebrated the Convent Festival in honor of the Beata Vergine Maria Incoronata. As on every last Saturday of April, the community accompanied the statue of the Madonna in procession from the sanctuary of Maria SS. della Libera to the Capuchin Convent.
The liturgical program included the Holy Rosary, a solemn mass in the convent church, and at noon, the solemn blessing of the city, the fields, and the sea. The religious aspect was joined, as per tradition, by the popular celebration: wholesome open-air lunches in the meadows around the convent and Gargano melodies accompanying the afternoon.
Rodi Garganico can be reached by car along the SS89 Garganica road; the reference stations are those of the Ferrovie del Gargano. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and Foggia "Gino Lisa". The Capuchin Convent is located on the hills overlooking the historic center.
The festival takes place every last Saturday of April. Free admission.
Wear comfortable clothing for the walk up to the convent and for the day spent outdoors; it is customary to bring a packed lunch to share in the meadows around the convent.
