A slice of Germany in the heart of Abruzzo, in Lanciano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Contrada Serre Sausage Festival is one of the most curious and identity-defining culinary events in Abruzzo. It takes place in Lanciano, specifically in the Contrada Serre district, and is organized by the Associazione Culturale e Ricreativa Serre. Its history dates back to the 1960s, when many young people from the area emigrated to Germany, settling primarily in Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, and Neuss.
Those who stayed abroad and those who returned never severed their ties with the German land. This nostalgia, and the desire to bring a corner of Germany to Abruzzo, gave birth to the festival. Even today, former emigrants work directly with German artisans to ensure the import of authentic, high-quality sausages.
The heart of the festival is the grilled sausage: about three hundred kilograms of sausages are cooked on the grill, basted with their own fat or traditional German Schmalz (lard), and scored diagonally to achieve a crispy, golden crust with a tender center. It is a ritual that draws locals from Lanciano, neighboring towns, and numerous tourists every year.
Alongside the signature dish, the food stalls offer the best of Abruzzo's culinary excellence:
The meeting of Teutonic cuisine and typical Abruzzo products makes this festival a truly unique gastronomic experience in the Chieti province's summer calendar.
The evenings of the Sausage Festival are brought to life by live music, ballroom orchestras, and bands that accompany dinners and dancing under the stars. The atmosphere is that of a genuine Abruzzo neighborhood feast, where conviviality, shared memories, and a sense of community are just as important as the food.
With over thirty-five editions behind it, the Contrada Serre Sausage Festival has become a staple of the Lanciano summer, telling a chapter of Italian migration history through the unmistakable flavor of a grilled sausage served in the heart of Abruzzo.
The Contrada Serre Sausage Festival returns in the summer of 2026 to Lanciano, in the province of Chieti. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated by the organizers: the event is usually held in August, around the second Sunday. The detailed program with musical acts and culinary appointments will be published by the Associazione Culturale e Ricreativa Serre in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival takes place in Contrada Serre, a district of Lanciano (CH), along the streets and spaces managed by the Associazione Culturale e Ricreativa Serre.
By car: Lanciano is accessible via the A14 motorway (Lanciano-Val di Sangro exit), then follow signs for Contrada Serre. By train: Lanciano station, then local connections. Nearest airport: Abruzzo Airport in Pescara.
