A month of lights, video mapping, free concerts, and the Vigilie Nocerine across Piazza Amendola, Piazza Diaz, and Piazza del Corso
Illuminiamo il Natale is the banner under which the Municipality of Nocera Inferiore, in the Province of Salerno, celebrates the festive season from the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany. Rather than a single event, it is a widespread festival: for nearly a month, the three main squares — Piazza Amendola, Piazza Diaz, and Piazza del Corso — become open-air stages, connected by light trails and a simple goal: to encourage people to stroll through the city center during the winter evenings. The program is the result of a collaboration between the municipal administration, Confcommercio – Provincial District of Salerno, and the Salerno Chamber of Commerce, combining the official «Natale Insieme» program with local merchants' initiatives.
The festivities officially kick off with the lighting of the Christmas tree and illuminations in Piazza Amendola, usually on the evening of December 8th, accompanied by music and crowds filling the square. From that moment on, the center remains illuminated until January 6th. Alongside traditional lights, recent years have seen the return of video mapping: architectural projections that animate building facades in three different parts of the city, becoming one of the most photographed attractions of the Nocera holidays. The scene is completed by the Christmas market, exhibitor stalls, and decorated shop windows along the main street.
If there is one thing that makes Christmas in Nocera Inferiore recognizable beyond municipal borders, it is the Vigilie Nocerine. On December 24th and 31st, bars, restaurants, pubs, and shops coordinate to simultaneously animate the center and the outskirts with DJ sets, live music, and special culinary offerings: a long, city-wide aperitif that begins in the late morning and continues into the early hours, before the traditional festive dinner. Over the years, this has become a true identity brand for the city, requiring specific municipal ordinances regarding music and service. Visitors from outside find an atmosphere more akin to a village festival multiplied by a city of fifty thousand inhabitants than a classic Christmas market.
Music is the driving force of the program. December evenings feature artists and shows in Piazza del Corso and Piazza Amendola, while the highlight is the New Year's Day concert in Piazza Diaz, in front of the Town Hall: a well-known name in Italian music is invited to ring in the new year before thousands of people. Recent years have seen performers like Coma_Cose and Mario Biondi take the stage, confirming a programming choice that aims high while keeping admission free. The calendar concludes on January 6th with the event dedicated to the Befana.
A large part of the festival is designed for children. In the afternoon, the historic center hosts entertainment activities with Santa Claus and his elves, soap bubbles, street games, and shows, typically between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. A marching band travels through the city streets to create a festive atmosphere, while parades and readings round out a program that alternates between moments for the little ones and evenings for an adult audience.
Nocera Inferiore is the main hub of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, the plain between Mount Vesuvius and the Lattari Mountains, known throughout Italy for the cultivation of San Marzano tomatoes. It is a city with a very long history, heir to the ancient Nuceria Alfaterna, featuring the Paleochristian Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Castello del Parco among its symbolic monuments. Its location, halfway between Naples, Salerno, and the Amalfi Coast, makes it easily accessible and a great base for those visiting Campania in winter, when major archaeological sites and art cities are less crowded.
The Nocera Christmas lacks the alpine scenery of Northern markets: it is an urban, Southern Christmas, made of crowded squares, free music, lights, and street food. Those looking for an authentic experience without an entry fee, just a stone's throw from Naples and Salerno, will find a month of events here that perfectly capture how the holiday is celebrated in Campania.
The program was presented in early December 2025 by the municipal administration together with Confcommercio – Provincial District of Salerno and the Salerno Chamber of Commerce, under the title «Illuminiamo il Natale». The program ran from December 8th to January 6th between Piazza Amendola, Piazza Diaz, and Piazza del Corso, featuring light trails, the return of video mapping projected onto three city locations, a market, family and children's entertainment, shows, and concerts.
The opening, on December 8th at 7:00 PM in Piazza Amendola, coincided with the lighting of the tree and illuminations. Musical evenings followed in Piazza del Corso with Selma, Luca Sepe on December 19th, Dadà on December 28th, and Tony Esposito on January 4th. The Vigilie Nocerine took place on December 24th and 31st, with DJ sets and roving entertainment between the center and the suburbs, while on January 1st, Piazza Diaz hosted the New Year's Day concert with Mario Biondi, invited by the administration to inaugurate 2026 with soul, jazz, and pop. The festivities closed on January 6th with the XXL Befana.
Events are concentrated in the center of Nocera Inferiore (SA), postal code 84014: Piazza Amendola (tree and illuminations), Piazza Diaz in front of the Town Hall (New Year's Day concert), and Piazza del Corso (evening concerts). The Vigilie Nocerine also involve the outlying districts.
The program typically runs from December 8th to January 6th. Official municipal information indicates zero cost for scheduled events: concerts in the square, children's entertainment, and the Vigilie Nocerine are free to access. Evening shows usually start after 7:00 PM, with children's entertainment in the late afternoon.
