The living Nativity scene in the medieval village on Lake Trasimeno
The Presepe della Stella is one of the most evocative Christmas events in Passignano sul Trasimeno, in the province of Perugia. Born in 1987 thanks to the local scout group, it has since grown to become an unmissable event of Umbrian Christmas, organized by the Pro Loco with the involvement of the entire community.
For a few evenings a year, the medieval historic center comes alive with over 150 costumed figures spread throughout alleys, arches, and staircases. The route starts from the village's entrance arch and gradually climbs to the Rocca, at the top of which is placed the comet star that illuminates the Nativity scene. Along the way, visitors encounter artisans at work, bakers preparing fresh bread, farmers, and workshops recreating ancient trades.
The characteristic of the Presepe della Stella is its active participation: adults and children can immerse themselves in the Christmas spirit by tasting typical products, watching handmade crafts being made, and experiencing the life of ancient Bethlehem up close. The natural setting of Lake Trasimeno and the village atmosphere make the event particularly scenic.
The living Nativity scene in Passignano is part of Umbria's rich tradition of living and artistic Nativity scenes, which animate numerous villages in the region during the holidays. For those visiting Trasimeno during the Christmas period, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic town, far from the summer tourist routes.
The Presepe della Stella returns to Passignano sul Trasimeno for Christmas 2026-2027. The event maintains its proven structure: a route of costumed figures that climbs from the village arch to the medieval Rocca, where the comet star shines above the Nativity. Along the way, there are workshops, ancient trades, and tastings of typical products.
The opening days, according to tradition, fall between late December and Epiphany.
The detailed program for the 2026-2027 edition, including opening days and times, will be announced by the Pro Loco of Passignano in the weeks preceding the holidays. The dates usually follow the calendar between St. Stephen's Day (December 26th) and Epiphany (January 6th).
Passignano sul Trasimeno is reachable by car from the Perugia-Bettolle junction (Passignano exit) and by train on the Foligno-Terontola line, with a station in town. Entry to the route is through the historic center arch.
The event takes place on specific days between late December and Epiphany, usually in the late afternoon. Warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for the uphill walk to the Rocca.
