Christmas in the city of the 'Nzegna

Every year, between December and January, Carovigno—a small white-washed village in the Upper Salento region, in the province of Brindisi, famous for its ancient 'Nzegna tradition and the Dentice di Frasso Castle—dresses up for the holidays with the "Christmas in Carovigno - Lights, Stories and Emotions" program. This widespread event, promoted by the Municipality of Carovigno, brings the historic center, squares, and iconic landmarks to life for nearly two months with illuminations, shows, concerts, markets, and traditional gatherings.

A village that lights up

The heart of the event is Piazza 'Nzegna, where the lighting of the tree and the illuminations officially kick off the festivities, alongside the scenic lighting of the Castle. Surrounding it, the maze of alleys in the historic center fills with wooden stalls, decorations, and light installations, while Corso Umberto I becomes the natural stage for the busiest evenings. It is a village-scale Christmas, where community spirit and the participation of local associations count just as much as the headline events.

Between spectacle, sport, and tradition

The calendar is intentionally varied and designed for all ages. There are activities for the little ones, with Santa's Village and the arrival of the Befana; concerts, often hosted in the evocative setting of the Mother Church; shows like the White Night and the Night of Wonders, featuring illusionists and street performers; and major sporting and charity events, from inclusive baskin tournaments to 5-a-side football. There is also the Living Nativity, set up in the charming surroundings of the old village, which re-enacts the Nativity with costumed performers.

The Fòcara di Serranova

Ideally closing the long festive period is an ancient and deeply felt ritual: the Fòcara di Serranova, the massive bonfire lit in the hamlet of Serranova at the end of January, following the Puglian traditions linked to propitiatory fire. It is a sign that, in Carovigno, Christmas is not just a brief period of lights, but a tapestry of stories, popular devotion, and shared emotions rooted in the identity of the territory.
