The patronal feast of Ucria in the Nebrodi mountains, blending faith, tradition, and music
The Patronal Feast of the SS. Cristo della Pietà is the most important event in the calendar of Ucria, a mountain village of just over a thousand inhabitants nestled in the Nebrodi Park, in the province of Messina, Sicily. The village, perched between 710 and 790 meters above sea level, honors its patron saint on two fixed dates: May 3rd and September 14th, the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which marks the peak of the celebrations.
The SS. Cristo della Pietà has been the spiritual anchor for the people of Ucria for centuries. The September festival also draws back families who emigrated in the last century, many of whom moved to North America: this return to their roots blends with religious ritual, making the day a powerful moment of community identity.
The heart of the festival is the procession. Following the solemn mass held in the afternoon, the statues of the SS. Cristo della Pietà and the Madonna Annunziata are carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the brass band and faithful in prayer. The pageant winds through the alleys and squares of the Nebrodi village, creating an atmosphere of deep reflection and collective participation.
The religious dimension is complemented by popular festivities. During the evenings of the celebration, the municipal administration and the organizing committee host concerts and performances in the square, often featuring nationally renowned guests: in recent years, Ucria has hosted artists such as Fred De Palma and Massimo Di Cataldo, alongside comedy and entertainment shows. The festival traditionally concludes with fireworks that light up the Nebrodi sky.
Visiting Ucria during the festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore one of the most characteristic villages in the Messina area: its churches, the Botanical Garden dedicated to the naturalist Bernardino da Ucria, and the ethnographic museums tell a story rooted in antiquity. The local gastronomy of the Nebrodi, with its typical products, completes the experience of a festival that unites the sacred, tradition, and warm hospitality.
The patronal feast of Ucria returns on September 14, 2026. The date is confirmed as it is the fixed liturgical recurrence of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the patron saint of the Nebrodi village. The heart of the day will remain the solemn mass and the procession of the statues of the SS. Cristo della Pietà and the Madonna Annunziata through the village streets.
The complete program with evening shows, concerts in the square, and fireworks will be published by the organizers closer to the event: we recommend following the channels of the San Pietro Apostolo Parish and the Municipality of Ucria for updates.
Ucria can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo-Capo d'Orlando exit and continuing inland along the Nebrodi roads (about 60 km west of Messina). The nearest train station is Capo d'Orlando-Naso on the Tyrrhenian line.
The patronal celebrations take place on September 14th (with a second observance on May 3rd).
Participation in religious rites, the procession, and the performances in the square is free and open to everyone.
