Crema's Ferragosto under the sign of the sweet-and-savory tortello
In Crema, in the province of Cremona, there is a dish that tells centuries of history: the 'tortello cremasco', a raviolo with a surprising filling that combines sweet and savory — amaretti biscuits, raisins, 'mostaccino' (a spiced biscuit), candied citron, and Grana Padano cheese — in a balance unparalleled in Italian cuisine. The Chiacchiere e Tortelli festival, held during Ferragosto, is dedicated precisely to this delicacy and takes place in Piazza Aldo Moro, in the heart of the city.
In addition to the tortello, the festival offers other local specialties: 'salame cremasco', 'Salva Cremasco DOP' (a symbolic cheese of the plain), 'spongarda' (a typical sweet cake), and 'bertolina' (a sweet grape focaccia). The menus are bilingual, Italian and English, with gluten-free and lactose-free options, and offer 500 seats every evening served by dozens of volunteers.
The event is organized by Carnevale Cremasco ODV, promoted by the Municipality of Crema with the support of the Province of Cremona and the Lombardy Region. Alongside gastronomy, there is live music every evening and free guided walks "Crema in Mezz'Ora" to discover the historic center. Significant attention is also paid to sustainability: for every ten portions of pasta sold, a tree is planted.
Chiacchiere e Tortelli is the best way to discover Crema's gastronomic identity during Ferragosto, when the city center comes alive. An opportunity to taste the famous 'tortello cremasco' directly in its hometown, amidst music and culture.
The 4th edition of Chiacchiere e Tortelli will liven up Piazza Aldo Moro from August 12th to 17th, 2026, organized by Carnevale Cremasco ODV. The menu revolves around the 'tortello cremasco' and local specialties ('salame cremasco', 'Salva Cremasco DOP', 'spongarda', 'bertolina'), with 500 seats available each evening served by 58 volunteers, a bilingual IT/EN menu, and gluten-free and lactose-free options. Dinner service in the evenings and lunches from August 15th to 17th.
