Celebrations in Honor of the Madonna Grande

The patronal festival of Fresagrandinaria

Every year, in the days following Pentecost, the municipality of Fresagrandinaria in the province of Chieti (Abruzzo) celebrates the Celebrations in honor of the Madonna Grande, its patron saint. It is the most cherished event of the year for the community of this village in the Vasto hinterland, perched at an altitude of approximately 460 meters between the Trigno and Sinello valleys. The festival weaves deep religious devotion with the secular festivities typical of Abruzzese village fairs: brass bands, live shows, illuminations, and fireworks.

The centuries-old pilgrimage to Nuova Cliternia

The most extraordinary element of the festival is the pilgrimage on foot to the Sanctuary of the Madonna Grande, located in Nuova Cliternia, a hamlet of Campomarino in the province of Campobasso (Molise). Documented with certainty since at least 1660, this journey has never been interrupted: the faithful depart at dawn from the parish church, following a blessing and mass, and embark on a route of approximately forty kilometers that crosses the Trigno River, touches the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Bisaccia in Montenero, descends into the Biferno valley, and climbs back up toward Portocannone.

As the local tradition says, they set off "regardless of whether it rains, the rivers are in flood, or the wind blows: one must go, and one goes." Upon arrival in the evening, the pilgrims circle the Cliternia church three times before attending the solemn mass. The octagonal 17th-century sanctuary houses an ancient and venerated Baroque image of the Madonna and serves as a destination of devotion for numerous communities across Abruzzo and Molise.

The days of the festival

The calendar follows the liturgical rhythm linked to Pentecost. The celebrations typically include:

• The dawn pilgrimage to Nuova Cliternia, departing from the parish with an evening mass at the sanctuary;
• The day of the patronal festival, opening in the morning with firecrackers, church bells, and a brass band concert that enlivens the entire day;
• The day of thanksgiving, featuring entertainment for children, a band concert, evening mass, a procession through the village streets, and, as a grand finale, a lottery draw and a fireworks display.

An identity-defining tradition

The Madonna Grande represents much more than just devotion: it is a symbol of identity that gathers Fresani living elsewhere every year, often serving as the only occasion for them to reconnect with their hometown. The festival is organized by the SS. Salvatore Parish together with the Festival Committee, under the patronage of the Municipality of Fresagrandinaria, and continues to attract hundreds of faithful along one of the oldest devotional paths in the Abruzzo and Molise region.
