About Saint Michael the Archangel

Every late September, Vasto unites to honor its patron saint, Michael the Archangel, with five days of religious and secular celebrations. Amidst the illuminations of the historic center, the solemn procession, concerts in Piazza Rossetti and Piazza Pudente, the funfair, and the fireworks display lighting up the gulf, the city celebrates one of the most cherished traditions of the Adriatic Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti.

The Patronal Feast of Vasto

The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most anticipated event of the year for Vasto, an elegant city overlooking the gulf of the same name in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Saint Michael the Archangel, the city's protector, is celebrated on September 29th, but the festivities span about five days around that date, combining spiritual devotion with a rich program of secular events that bring the squares of the historic center to life.

The religious dimension

The heart of the feast is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where on the patron's day, Holy Masses are held throughout the day, including the solemn celebration presided over by the Archbishop. The most intense moment is the solemn procession with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, which winds through the streets and squares of the old town accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and marching bands, renewing a centuries-old bond between the Vasto community and its protector.

Concerts, shows, and tradition

The secular program transforms Piazza Rossetti, Piazza del Popolo, and Piazza Pudente into open-air stages. Recent editions have featured big names in Italian music and shows for all tastes, alongside beloved recurring events such as:

  • the Children's Festival with Pompieropoli in Piazza Rossetti;
  • performances by institutional marching bands (State Police, Financial Guard);
  • the Saint Michael Prize at the Pinacoteca of Palazzo D'Avalos;
  • evening concerts and DJ sets that keep the squares lively until late at night.

The streets of the center are lit up with evocative luminarie (light displays), while the funfair and markets complete the festive atmosphere. There is no shortage of food stalls offering the typical flavors of the Abruzzo tradition.

The grand finale on the gulf

The festivities conclude with the traditional fireworks display: the fireworks reflect on the Gulf of Vasto, creating one of the most scenic and anticipated shows on the entire Trabocchi Coast, attracting locals and visitors from all over Abruzzo every year.

Official dates and the 2026 program have not yet been announced: traditionally, festivities are expected to span five days around the patron's day, featuring religious celebrations, a procession, concerts in the squares, and the customary fireworks display over the gulf.

The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel in Vasto is expected to take place in late September, around the liturgical day of the patron, September 29th. At the moment, the Municipality of Vasto and the organizers have not yet released the official calendar or the program of events. Based on recent editions, a solemn procession, Holy Masses in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, concerts in the historic squares, a funfair, markets, and the traditional closing fireworks display are expected.
