About Viso Adorno

In Torino di Sangro, nestled on the Costa dei Trabocchi in the province of Chieti, one of Abruzzo's most evocative folk traditions comes to life every December 9th and 10th: the Mattinata del Viso Adorno. On the evening of December 9th, a torchlight procession winds its way from the seaside hamlet to the historic center along the ancient Tratturo Magno, filled with songs and litanies. At dawn on the 10th, singers perform the traditional Viso Adorno chant on the church square—a devotion celebrating the translation of the Holy House from Nazareth to Loreto.

An ancient rite on the Costa dei Trabocchi

The Mattinata del Viso Adorno, also known as the Viso Adorno Rite or Visadorno, is one of the most fascinating religious folk traditions in Abruzzo. It takes place every year on December 9th and 10th in Torino di Sangro, a hillside village on the Costa dei Trabocchi, in the province of Chieti. This celebration is distinct from the main patronal feast held in May; here, the town gathers around the venerated Our Lady of Loreto for an intensely moving nocturnal ritual.

The legend of the Holy House

The rite is rooted in a legendary event: the translation of the Holy House of Mary from Nazareth to Loreto, which tradition holds occurred on the night between December 9th and 10th, 1294. Our Lady of Loreto is the deeply revered patron saint of Torino di Sangro, and every year the community renews this memory with songs, prayers, and customs passed down through generations.

The torchlight procession (December 9th)

In the late afternoon of December 9th, citizens and the faithful gather in the seaside hamlet of Morge, carrying torches, and begin a procession toward the historic center. The route follows the path of the ancient Tratturo Magno, the wide grassy trail once used for transhumance. Along the way, litanies and devotional songs are chanted, with stops where bread and oil are distributed. The procession concludes at the Church of Our Lady of Loreto, where the faithful spend the night in quiet prayer, keeping vigil beside the statue of the Virgin.

The Viso Adorno chant at dawn (December 10th)

At the first light of dawn on December 10th, the statue of the Madonna is brought out onto the church square, and the singers perform the verses of the Viso Adorno, the local chant that gives the entire rite its name, accompanied by the Buongiorno alla Vergine (Good Morning to the Virgin) and a moving pastoral hymn. The local brass band then pays tribute to the town's main authorities—the mayor, the parish priest, and local notables—with personalized verses; at each "station," the group stops for refreshments offered by the hosts, creating an atmosphere of shared celebration.

The bonfire and final festivities

As evening falls on December 10th, before returning the statue to its niche, a solemn mass is celebrated. Upon exiting, amidst songs, dances, fireworks, and toasts with red wine, locals enjoy traditional sweets and scrippelle. A large bonfire illuminates the night, concluding the evocative celebration, often accompanied by a raffle and the sharing of local products.

Torino di Sangro and its tradition

Immersed between the Lecceta Nature Reserve and the beaches of the Costa dei Trabocchi, Torino di Sangro preserves its deepest identity through this rite. Organized by the Our Lady of Loreto Parish with the support of the Municipality, the Viso Adorno blends faith, historical memory, and conviviality in one of the most authentic winter celebrations in Abruzzo.
