About Santa Clementina

Every year, on the last weekend of September, the small village of Castelguidone, in the province of Chieti, celebrates its patron saint, Santa Clementina, a young Roman martyr whose relics are kept in the Church of Santa Maria della Stella. Two days of faith and celebration that combine solemn mass, a brass band parading through the streets, a lottery, evening concerts in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, and traditional fireworks, in one of the most heartfelt traditions of the Alto Vastese region.

The patronal feast of Castelguidone

On the last Sunday of September, the municipality of Castelguidone, perched at an altitude of 775 meters among the streams of the Alto Vastese in the province of Chieti, gathers around its patron saint, Santa Clementina. The Santa Clementina Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for this small community of just under three hundred inhabitants: two days where religious and secular dimensions intertwine, drawing back to the village emigrants and families originally from the area scattered across Italy and the world.

Who was Santa Clementina

Santa Clementina was a young girl from a Roman family, martyred during the persecutions for professing and defending the Christian faith until she sacrificed her life. Her body, coming from the Roman catacombs and dressed in precious silk fabrics dating back to the late 18th century, was sent in 1791 to the Diocese of Trivento, which assigned it to the Parish of Santa Maria della Stella in Castelguidone. Since then, the saint has been venerated as the patron of the village, and her relics are preserved inside the church, which was rebuilt in the 1960s. Once, the relics were carried in procession through the streets of the village; today, as the delicate silk fabrics are too fragile to be moved, the processional tradition continues with a new image of the saint, while the body remains guarded and protected in the church.

The program between the sacred and the secular

The day of celebration opens early in the morning with the brass band parading through the streets of the village, followed by religious celebrations and a solemn mass in honor of the patron saint. In the afternoon, the band performs again in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, the beating heart of the festivities, while in the evening, the secular program gives way to major concerts and musical shows. There is no shortage of traditional appointments that mark every edition:

  • solemn mass and moments of prayer dedicated to Santa Clementina;
  • the brass band accompanying the festivities from morning to night;
  • the drawing of the village lottery tickets;
  • daytime pyrotechnic displays and the midnight fireworks;
  • evening concerts in the square featuring artists and bands from the Italian music scene.

In recent years, the stage in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi has hosted well-known names in Italian music, a testament to the commitment of the Festival Committee, the Castelguidone Cultural Association, and the municipal administration in offering a high-quality program despite the small size of the village.

A village in the Alto Vastese, Abruzzo

Castelguidone belongs to the Basso Sangro-Trigno area, in the mountainous hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo. The village retains the structure of an ancient fortified settlement, with stone houses, stepped alleys, and evocative sights such as the characteristic Colonnato. The feast of Santa Clementina represents the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, far from mass tourism circuits, and to experience the hospitality of a community deeply tied to its roots and its patron saint.
