A day celebrating the prized black truffle of Monferrato and Piemonte Doc Albarossa wine
Cavatore is a small town nestled in the hills of the Acqui area, in the province of Alessandria, in the heart of Piedmont. This corner of Monferrato hosts a special day focusing on two iconic local products: the prized black truffle and Piemonte Doc Albarossa. The event, held across the village streets, Casa Felicita, and the Casa Scuti Municipal Hall, is designed as a journey of discovery that blends gastronomy, culture, and rural traditions.
Albarossa is an indigenous Piedmontese grape variety born from a cross between Barbera and Nebbiolo: a wine with structure, intensity, and excellent aging potential, combining the power of Nebbiolo with the freshness of Barbera. Its promotion is managed by the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato, an organization founded in 1946 that now brings together over 430 associated wineries and protects twelve denominations. The Cavatore event is part of the Consortium's calendar, designed to strengthen awareness of protected denominations and the bond between wine, community, and territory.
The other star of the show is the prized black truffle, a subterranean gem of the Monferrato hills gathered by local trifulau (truffle hunters) with their trained dogs. During the day, the Associazione Tartufai del Monferrato guides visitors in discovering this product through tasting stands, demonstrations, and an engaging truffle-hunting competition in the gardens of the Cavatore Tower, open to dogs of all breeds.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Cavatore together with the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato, the Piedmont Region, Golosaria, Alexala, and the Associazione Tartufai del Monferrato, in a collaboration that makes this day an authentic showcase of the Acqui area and the Monferrato of Alessandria.
The 2026 edition took place on Sunday, March 8, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, throughout the streets of Cavatore, at Casa Felicita, and in the Casa Scuti Municipal Hall. The day intertwined gastronomic culture and local tradition, with the participation of the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato, the Piedmont Region, Golosaria, Alexala, and the Associazione Tartufai del Monferrato. The stars were the prized black truffle and Piemonte Doc Albarossa wine, showcased through tastings, meetings, and the spectacular truffle dog competition.
Cavatore is located in the hills near Acqui Terme, in the province of Alessandria. By car, it can be reached via the A26 motorway (Predosa exit) or the main road to Acqui Terme, then continuing along the hilly roads towards the village. The reference railway station is Acqui Terme, from which you can continue by car.
The event takes place from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM throughout the village, at Casa Felicita, and in the Casa Scuti Municipal Hall. The masterclass led by Paolo Massobrio has free admission but limited seating; booking is recommended.
Wear comfortable shoes to move between the different locations in the village. Acqui Terme, just a few minutes away, offers plenty of accommodation and dining options for those wishing to extend their visit to Monferrato.
