Sicily's oldest bread celebrated in the historic heart of Castelvetrano
The Castelvetrano Black Bread Festival is a young yet highly anticipated food and wine event held every autumn in the heart of Castelvetrano, in the province of Trapani, within the Belice Valley. Established in 2024, the festival celebrates the Black Bread, known in the local dialect as pani nìvuru, which is considered one of the area's defining products and is often called "the oldest bread in Sicily."
What makes this bread unique is its dark color and extraordinary organoleptic qualities, resulting from the blend of two durum wheat semolinas: sifted semolina from Sicilian durum wheat and Tumminia, an ancient and prized variety typical of the Trapani region. It is baked in traditional wood-fired ovens, following ritual gestures passed down through generations. During the festival, the bread is showcased in numerous preparations by local bakers, accompanied by fresh extra virgin Nocellara del Belice PDO olive oil, another local excellence.
The event enlivens the Sistema delle Piazze in Castelvetrano, including Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Principe di Piemonte, and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, extending to the alleys adjacent to the Mother Church, where the "Alleys of Art and Craftsmanship" market exhibition comes to life. The atmosphere is that of a grand popular celebration: tastings, food stands, a street food area, performances by folk groups, live music, group dancing, and plenty of entertainment for all ages.
Beyond the culinary aspect, the festival offers show cooking with master bakers and chefs, seminars on the ritual gestures of bread-making, urban tours, and guided tours of the city's monuments and museums. It is an opportunity to discover Castelvetrano and its history, from the legacy of nearby Selinunte to the artistic heritage of the historic center, in a weekend that weaves together Sicilian flavors, knowledge, and tradition.
Promoted by the Municipality of Castelvetrano together with the Pane Nero Association and supported by the Regional Department of Productive Activities, the festival has grown rapidly: from the first edition in 2024 to the second in 2025, with the participation of twelve local bakers, and now the third edition in 2026. It has become one of the reference autumn events for the Province of Trapani and the entire western Sicily.
Following the growing success of the first two editions, the Castelvetrano Black Bread Festival returns for its third edition on October 17 and 18, 2026, confirming the autumn appointment in the historic center of the Trapani city. The star will remain the Black Bread (pani nìvuru) made with premium Tumminia and sifted Sicilian durum wheat semolina, accompanied by extra virgin Nocellara del Belice PDO oil.
As in previous editions, tastings with local bakers, a street food area, show cooking, performances by folk groups, live music, group dancing, the craft market exhibition, and guided tours of the historic center's monuments are expected.
The detailed program with times, guests, and artists will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the third edition in 2026 will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
