Four days in the historic center of Salemi featuring busiata pasta, local wine, music, and international folklore
The Busiata Festival in the Village takes place every August in the historic center of Salemi, a town in the province of Trapani, Sicily. Recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Salemi hosts the festival by turning its streets and squares—from the striking Norman-Swabian Castle to Piazza Libertà and Piazza Italia—into a vast open-air food and wine trail. The event is organized by the City of Salemi in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the Saleming Association, and has earned the national "Quality Festival" mark from the Italian National Union of Pro Loco (Unpli).
The star dish is busiata, a fresh, spiral-shaped pasta made by hand by rolling the dough around a thin stem (the "buso"), from which it takes its name. It is one of the symbols of Trapani cuisine, traditionally served with pesto alla trapanese made from almonds, tomatoes, basil, and garlic. During the festival, busiata is offered in numerous versions prepared by local restaurateurs, chefs, and producers: from the classic pesto to variations with eggplant and salted ricotta, sausage, shrimp, swordfish, speck, and pistachios, as well as whole-wheat, egg-based, and gluten-free versions for celiacs.
Tastings are accompanied by a rich entertainment program: live and street music throughout the stalls, performances, cooking shows, and the International Folklore Festival, which brings groups and traditions from various countries to Salemi. There are also special openings of the city's museum complex, the Castle, and the Mother Church, as well as busiata workshops and play areas designed for families and children.
The festival is organized as a plastic-free event, using biodegradable materials at all tasting stations. During the evenings, the historic center is closed to traffic, and a shuttle service connects the parking areas to the village, allowing visitors to enjoy the illuminated streets of Salemi in peace. Admission to the event is free; you only pay for food and drink via tickets.
The Busiata Festival in the Village returns to Salemi (Trapani) from August 5th to 8th, 2026, confirming the four evenings that have become a tradition in the historic center. For 2026, the heart of the festival remains the numerous tasting stations for busiata in many variations, accompanied by wine from local cellars, along with the International Folklore Festival and a program of street music, performances, and openings of city museums.
At the moment, the organizers have confirmed the dates but have not yet published the detailed day-by-day program: the official website states that the 2026 program will be announced shortly. Updated information on artists, stations, and schedules will be communicated by the City of Salemi and the organizing associations in the weeks leading up to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. The organizers have announced the dates (August 5-8, 2026) and confirmed the presence of the International Folklore Festival; the complete program, including artists, food stations, and schedules, will be released shortly on the event's official channels.
Salemi is located in the hinterland of the Trapani province, in Western Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, taking the Salemi exit. The nearest airports are Trapani-Birgi and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
During the evenings, the historic center is closed to traffic. A shuttle service to and from the parking areas is available (in recent editions, it cost 2 euros for a round trip, free for children under 10).
Admission to the festival is free. Tastings are paid for via tickets: in recent editions, a plate of busiata with a glass of local wine cost about 7 euros (8 euros for the gluten-free version). Stalls generally open from 6:00 PM.
