The sports festival that transforms the historic center into an Olympic village
In the heart of the Bassa Reggiana, Castelsport is now an eagerly awaited event by the entire community of Castelnovo di Sotto, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. For an entire weekend, the historic center is closed to traffic and transforms into a large open-air Olympic village, where competition gives way to sharing and the desire to be together.
The beauty of Castelsport is its variety: in the squares and streets of the town, stations are set up dedicated to dozens of sports disciplines, many of which are unusual and spectacular. Among the proposals in recent years:
Castelsport involves children from the last year of kindergarten, primary school, and lower secondary school from six municipalities in the area: Castelnovo di Sotto, Cadelbosco di Sopra, Bagnolo in Piano, Campegine, Gattatico, and Poviglio. For the little ones, there is the Castelbaby section, with activities dedicated to children in their last year of kindergarten, also hosted at the Asp Opus Civium assisted living facility.
The event, organized by ASD Castelsport in collaboration with local sports associations and with the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Province of Reggio Emilia, and the involved municipalities, also has an important solidarity purpose: each edition raises funds for the local comprehensive institutes. Over the years, the collection has exceeded 4,600 euros for the schools of the six municipalities.
In addition to sports, the program includes festive moments for everyone: dinner along the streets of the center, musical entertainment, and evening shows. A simple and genuine formula, capable of uniting different generations and municipalities around the values of sport and togetherness.
The fifteenth edition of Castelsport was held on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Castelnovo di Sotto, in the province of Reggio Emilia. On Saturday, the gathering was scheduled for 2:00 PM in Piazza IV Novembre, followed by the flag-raising ceremony with the Italian anthem at 2:40 PM and the start of the games at 2:45 PM. The day continued with dinner along Via Gramsci at 7:15 PM and, in the evening, with the theatrical performance "Il mondo di lร " (The World Beyond) in Piazza Prampolini at 9:30 PM.
On Sunday, June 7, the games resumed at 9:00 AM and concluded around noon. Among the disciplines offered: summer curling, climbing wall, biathlon, and road safety education by the State Police. The Castelbaby section for the youngest children was also confirmed. The event involved children from Castelnovo di Sotto, Cadelbosco di Sopra, Bagnolo, Campegine, Gattatico, and Poviglio.
Castelnovo di Sotto is located in the province of Reggio Emilia, a few kilometers from the Reggio Emilia highway exit on the A1. It is easily reached by car from the Via Emilia; the nearest train station is Reggio Emilia, connected to the town by local buses.
For the duration of the event, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in the areas outside the center and proceed on foot. Activities take place outdoors, in the squares and along the streets of the town.
Participation in sports activities is free but requires registration, which usually opens in spring (in conjunction with the local Fair) and closes a few weeks before the event. A sports medical certificate is required at the time of registration.
