A year of meetings, music, theatre, and art for the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis in Sissa Trecasali
In 2026, it will be 800 years since the death of Saint Francis of Assisi (1226-2026), an anniversary celebrated throughout Italy under the auspices of the National Committee dedicated to it. The Municipality of Sissa Trecasali, in the province of Parma, also wished to pay homage to the Poor Man of Assisi with Francesco 800, a cycle of nine stages that spans the entire municipal territory from March to December, intertwining spirituality, history, music, and art.
The event is promoted by the Municipality with the organization of Bi&Bi Eventi and curated by architect Vitaliano Biondi (Arvales Fratres), and enjoys the patronage of the Province of Parma and the National Committee for the celebration of the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis. The initiatives are spread across the hamlets of Sissa, Trecasali, Ronco Campo Canneto, Torricella, Palasone, and San Quirico, enhancing the churches, oratories, and historical spaces of the lowlands.
The heart of the project is a diverse calendar that alternates moments of reflection and celebration. Among the highlights is the theatrical performance «San Francesco, uomo di Dio», staged in the Church of Sant'Amatore in Ronco Campo Canneto, and an evening at the Rocca dei Terzi that combines a polyphonic music concert by the «Città di Parma» Choir with a Franciscan dinner inspired by medieval cuisine.
Scholar Simone Fappanni is the author of the conference series L'Uomo, il Santo, il Simbolo: San Francesco nell'arte (The Man, the Saint, the Symbol: Saint Francis in Art), dedicated to Franciscan iconography, and curates the autumn exhibition Frate Sole e Sorella Luna. Visioni pittoriche francescane (Brother Sun and Sister Moon. Franciscan Pictorial Visions), held at the Oratorio del Crocifisso. There is also space for historical in-depth study, with meetings on medieval heresies in Francis's time hosted at the «Giuseppe Tonna» Municipal Library.
Francesco 800 demonstrates how even a small municipality in Emilia-Romagna can contribute to a national commemoration, intertwining the great figure of Francis with the identity of its villages.
The first edition of Francesco 800 accompanies the public throughout 2026 with nine events spread across the Municipality of Sissa Trecasali, in the province of Parma. Promoted by the Municipality with Bi&Bi Eventi and curated by architect Vitaliano Biondi, the series celebrates the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi under the patronage of the Province of Parma and the dedicated National Committee.
The calendar alternates theatre, polyphonic music, conferences on iconography and medieval history, an autumn painting exhibition, and a convivial Franciscan dinner at the Rocca dei Terzi. A journey that combines the spiritual and cultural dimensions, enhancing the hamlets and churches of the territory.
The program is enriched by an opening iconographic conference also curated by Simone Fappanni. For updated schedules, please refer to the website of the Municipality of Sissa Trecasali and the channels of Bi&Bi Eventi.
