The only Italian event entirely dedicated to word puzzles and mind games, in Guastalla
The Enigmistica Festival is the only Italian event entirely dedicated to word puzzles, ludolinguistics, and mind games. It takes place in Guastalla, an elegant town in the Bassa Reggiana overlooking the Po River, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in Emilia-Romagna. Founded in 2021, in just a few years the festival has become a national reference point for enthusiasts of rebus, crosswords, sudoku, and all games that challenge ingenuity and linguistic creativity.
For the duration of the event, the historic heart of Guastalla comes alive and becomes a large thinking laboratory. Events are held in the city's symbolic locations: the "Ruggero Ruggeri" Municipal Theater, the Gonzaga-era Ducal Palace, and the former Church of San Francesco, which hosts the competitions. These are joined by squares, streets, and shop windows in the center, where enigmas and games are displayed, involving residents and visitors in a true open-air treasure hunt.
The program revolves around a packed schedule of competitions. The first days are dedicated to schools, with puzzle challenges that each year involve over a thousand students from numerous Italian provinces and regions. On weekends, rebus competitions, the Italian General Enigmistica Championship, and, at the closing, sudoku competitions open to everyone are held. The contests award strictly unpublished material and attract both established champions and casual enthusiasts.
Alongside the competitions, the festival offers a rich cultural program: masterclasses by linguists and scholars, conferences, book presentations, and meetings with the editorial staff of historic puzzle magazines, such as La Settimana Enigmistica. Evenings at the Municipal Theater host theatrical and musical performances inspired by wordplay, while the "Kids' Space" with professional educators and ludolinguistic workshops makes the event suitable for families too.
Organized by the association Laboratorio Democratico under the direction of Roberto Dallari, with the support of the Municipality and Province of Reggio Emilia, the Enigmistica Festival combines Italian puzzle tradition with a contemporary focus on creativity and games. It's an opportunity to discover Guastalla and, at the same time, to train your mind in the company of thousands of enthusiasts.
The Enigmistica Festival returns to Guastalla (RE) for its sixth edition, scheduled from Wednesday, October 7 to Sunday, October 11, 2026. As tradition dictates, the historic center will transform into a large creative thinking laboratory with competitions, conferences, book presentations, and opportunities for fun and social gathering, in addition to the puzzle games spread across squares, streets, and shop windows.
Among the new features announced for 2026 is the participation of the A.R.I. (Associazione Rebussistica Italiana), present on October 10 and 11 with a dedicated stand and two rebus creation contests inspired by Guastalla: one reserved for high school students, the other open to all enthusiasts. Thematic contests, inter-school challenges, and the "Kids' Space" for families are also confirmed.
The detailed day-by-day program, including schedules, guests, and shows, will be announced by the organization in the weeks preceding the event on the festival's official website and social media channels.
