The allegorical float parade in the heart of the Frentano village
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Castel Frentano Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in this small town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every year, between February and March, the streets of the historic center fill with color, music, and joy to celebrate Carnival according to traditional Abruzzese customs, featuring masks, confetti, and good-natured satire.
The heart of the festival is the allegorical float parade, which departs from Via Orientale and winds through the town to arrive at Piazza dell'Assunta, the village's main square. Along the route, the float is accompanied by masked groups, children in costume, and families in a festive procession that involves the entire Castel Frentano community.
Once the parade reaches the square, the party kicks into high gear with entertainment, music, games for children, and food stalls. It is the moment when the town comes together to enjoy traditional sweets and local specialties: Castel Frentano is, after all, famous for its bocconotti, the traditional filled pastry that is a symbol of Frentano cuisine. The afternoon concludes on a high note with the grand finale of the Carnival.
Organized with the involvement of local associations and the Associazione Castel Frentano Eventi, the Carnival is designed primarily for families and children. It retains the intimate and genuine atmosphere of a small village in the Chieti hinterland, where the festival is, above all, an opportunity to connect. In case of bad weather, the event may be postponed by a few days, as has happened in the past.
Nestled on the hills overlooking the Sangro Valley, a short distance from the Costa dei Trabocchi, Castel Frentano preserves a medieval historic center and a strong identity tied to its traditions. The Carnival represents one of the times of the year when this identity is most strongly expressed, alongside the famous Festa dell'Assunta in August. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality and the Associazione Castel Frentano Eventi.
The 2026 edition of the Castel Frentano Carnival does not yet have an officially announced date. As per tradition, the festival is expected to be held during the carnival period, between February and March, with the usual allegorical float parade through the historic center to Piazza dell'Assunta and an afternoon of entertainment, music, and food stalls in the square. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
