About Castel Fiorentino Festival

The Castel Fiorentino Festival is the summer classical music series in Torremaggiore, in the Alta Capitanata region of Foggia, promoted by the Associazione Mozart APS. For one week in July, chamber music concerts, recitals, and masterclasses bring the city's most evocative venues to life, from the Ducal Castle De Sangro to the Church of Sant'Anna, all with free admission. The festival takes its name from the ancient Castel Fiorentino, the Swabian site where Frederick II died, and weaves together music, literature, and visual arts in a program that celebrates the region's historical heritage.

A classical music festival in the heart of Capitanata

The Castel Fiorentino Festival is the premier classical music event in Torremaggiore, a town in the Alta Capitanata area of the Foggia province, in Apulia. Promoted by the Associazione Mozart APS in collaboration with the local Municipal Department of Culture and the "Luigi Rossi" Civic Musical High School, the festival brings a week of chamber music and classical repertoire concerts to the city every summer, with free admission for all.

The name and the legacy of Frederick II

The festival takes its name from the ancient Castel Fiorentino, the Swabian archaeological site located in the countryside of Torremaggiore: it was here, on December 13, 1250, that Frederick II of Swabia, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily, passed away. The festival embraces this historical legacy, transforming it into a musical and cultural journey that brings the public closer to the local heritage through the beauty of sound.

The typical program

The program alternates between recitals, chamber ensembles, and symphonic concerts, with a repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music, featuring celebrated works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Piazzolla, and Morricone. Alongside evening concerts, the festival offers:

  • Masterclasses in singing, violin, and other instruments led by conservatory professors;
  • Meetings blending music, literature, and visual arts, with book presentations and cultural insights;
  • Concerts in historical venues across the city, from the courtyard of the Ducal Castle De Sangro to the Church of Sant'Anna.

Torremaggiore and its summer

The Castel Fiorentino Festival is part of the rich summer calendar of Torremaggiore, known as "Torrestate," which combines music, cinema, sports, and tradition. The festival represents the most refined moment of the programming, attracting national and international musicians to an intimate and welcoming setting. It is an event that unites the city's musical vocation—home to an active musical high school—with the rediscovery of its iconic landmarks.

Why attend

With free admission, the intimate atmosphere of its venues, and a carefully curated program, the Castel Fiorentino Festival is an ideal opportunity to experience great music in an authentic setting in the Apulian hinterland, far from mass tourism and close to the Swabian history of Capitanata.
