Two days in the Asti Langhe region celebrating the renowned Roccaverano DOP goat cheese
The Carrettesca Fair and Roccaverano DOP Festival is the most anticipated event in Roccaverano, a small town in the Asti Langhe, located in the Province of Asti, Piedmont. Every year, on the last weekend of June, the historic center comes alive with stalls, tastings, and visitors arriving to celebrate the cheese that shares the village's name: Roccaverano DOP, the only Italian goat cheese with Protected Designation of Origin status produced exclusively from raw whole goat's milk. In 2026, the event celebrates a significant milestone: its twenty-fifth edition.
The Carrettesca was created to showcase the connection between Roccaverano DOP and its valleys of origin, known as the Four Valleys of the upper Langhe. The cheese, available in soft textures and various aging stages, is presented by the Consortium's producers in all its forms: from fresh and delicate to more aged and intense versions. The festival is promoted by the Consortium for the Protection of Roccaverano DOP with the support of the local municipality and regional associations.
The program spans two days. Friday evening kicks off the festivities with the first tastings of local specialties offered by regional associations and live music. Saturday is the main day: from the morning, the village hosts a market exhibition with around forty stalls featuring producers, local products, entertainment, and demonstrations.
The Carrettesca is also a moment to recognize production excellence. Awards are presented for "The Best Roccaverano DOP on the Table", judged by the ONAF delegation of Asti, and "The Best Roccaverano DOP at the Fair", chosen by the public through a blind tasting. The symbolic heart of the festival is the investiture of the Knight of Roccaverano DOP, an honor conferred upon those who have distinguished themselves in promoting the cheese and the territory.
Visiting the Carrettesca means immersing yourself in the authenticity of the Asti Langhe: rolling hills, Romanesque churches, quality wines, and a centuries-old dairy tradition. It is an ideal appointment for those seeking slow, tasteful tourism, far from the crowds and close to the stories of the people who keep these valleys alive.
The 2026 edition of the Carrettesca celebrates a quarter-century of the event. On Friday, June 27th, starting at 7:00 PM, tastings of local specialties offered by regional associations begin, accompanied by live music from the Jerry Carriello's Big Band. On Saturday, June 28th, from 10:00 AM until evening, the village hosts around forty stalls with local products, tastings, demonstrations, cheesemaking workshops for children, and entertainment. The awarding of "The Best Roccaverano DOP on the Table" (ONAF jury of Asti) and "The Best Roccaverano DOP at the Fair" (public vote) is confirmed, along with the investiture of the Knight of Roccaverano DOP.
Roccaverano is located in the upper Asti Langhe, about 30 km from Acqui Terme. By car: A26 motorway, exit at Ovada or Alessandria Sud, then follow provincial roads towards the Asti Langhe. The nearest train station is Acqui Terme, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
The last weekend of June. In 2026: Friday, June 27th and Saturday, June 28th.
Access to the event is free; specific tastings and activities may require a contribution.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking around the historic center, and bring a few bags for purchasing cheese and local products to take home.
