Immaculate Conception Feast

A heartfelt solemnity in the heart of Sicily

The Immaculate Conception Feast is one of the most cherished religious observances in Agira, a picturesque village in the province of Enna nestled on the eastern slope of Mount Teja, at an altitude of about 650 meters, overlooking the Salso and Simeto valleys. Every year, on December 8th, the entire community gathers for the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in a day of intense spiritual and popular participation.

The two processions of the day

The festival is organized by the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception and unfolds in two distinct stages across Agira. Early in the morning, the statue of the Virgin is carried in procession through the streets of the lower town before returning to the Church of Santa Margherita. In the afternoon, a second, evocative procession traverses the upper part of the village, eventually reaching the church again, where a solemn Holy Mass is celebrated at the end of the pageant.

All local confraternities take part in the celebrations, forming a procession that unites the sense of community with the legacy of the village's ancient devotional associations. On the eve of the feast, the event is announced by festive bell-ringing and cannon fire, traditional signals that summon the population to the commemoration.

The statue and the Church of Santa Margherita

The heart of the festival is the exquisite statue of the Virgin, created in 1787 by the Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Picano, a renowned artist and woodcarver of the time. The statue is housed within a wooden shrine at an altar dedicated to the Immaculate Conception inside the majestic Church of Santa Margherita. The building, whose original structure dates back to the first half of the 13th century, was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake thanks to the intervention of prominent Sicilian architects and houses valuable works of art.
