About Sea Bream Festival

On the only inhabited island in the Province of Livorno, part of Tuscany's wildest archipelago, the Capraia Sea Bream Festival celebrates fish farmed in the open sea by the Maricap cooperative. Every year around April 25th, the port of Capraia Isola comes alive from 12:30 PM, with local restaurateurs serving delicious dishes featuring sea bream and sea bass, the result of sustainable, antibiotic-free aquaculture. It is an event that kicks off the tourist season and highlights the deep bond between the island and its sea.

The Sea Bream Festival, the event that launches Capraia's season

The Capraia Sea Bream Festival is a vibrant gastronomic celebration held in the Municipality of Capraia Isola, the only island municipality in the Province of Livorno and one of the gems of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Established in 2025, following the success of the famous Squid Festival, this event has quickly become the highlight that opens the island's tourist season, attracting residents, boaters, and visitors arriving in Capraia during the spring.

A festival born from the sea

The star of the festival is the sea bream, farmed in the open sea by the Maricap (Mariculture and Research) cooperative, which has been active on the island since 1998. The facility covers over 42,000 square meters of water with offshore cages and employs about fifteen people: a rare example of sustainable, antibiotic-free aquaculture that prioritizes animal welfare. Since 2026, Maricap products have been able to display the Tuscan Archipelago National Park logo, a sign of their concrete commitment to protecting the International Sanctuary for Marine Mammals that surrounds the island.

What to eat

Starting at 12:30 PM, along the quay of the port of Capraia Isola, local restaurateurs set up their stalls to offer dishes prepared with fresh fish supplied by Maricap. Sea bream and sea bass are cooked according to traditional Tuscan maritime recipes, in a convivial, open-air atmosphere overlooking the sea. The festival is also an opportunity to discover the local seafood supply chain and the value of conscious consumption.

Capraia, an island to discover

Visiting the Sea Bream Festival is also a great excuse to explore Capraia, a wild, volcanic island with minimal human impact, a paradise for lovers of trekking, diving, and untouched nature. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Isola di Capraia with the patronage of the Municipality of Capraia Isola and the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, in collaboration with Maricap, Isle-Cap, Unicoop Firenze, Marina di Capraia Isola, and Toremar, the ferry company connecting the island to the mainland.
