The sea festival of Elba Island
The SEIF – Sea Essence International Festival is the flagship event that transforms Elba Island into a grand stage dedicated to the sea at the end of June. Conceived and promoted by the Fondazione Acqua dell'Elba, the festival focuses on the protection of marine ecosystems, maritime culture, and the sustainable development of coastal communities, with a perspective that embraces the entire Mediterranean. The event has become a highly anticipated appointment not only for residents but also for scientists, communicators, students, and visitors who choose the Tuscan archipelago to experience three days of sea-themed activities.
The eighth edition, scheduled from June 26 to 28, 2026, is dedicated to the theme of "Mediterranean Itineraries": shipping routes, coastal paths, and cultures that have always traversed the Mare Nostrum. The festival takes place in a widespread format across several locations on the island, in the municipalities of Marciana (the village of Procchio, with the Via del Mare), Marciana Marina, and Portoferraio, in the Province of Livorno.
The heart of SEIF is the link between scientific dissemination and environmental education. The Blue Schools network, supported by UNESCO-IOC and the European Commission, brings projects created by Italian students on ocean literacy and the protection of marine ecosystems to the stage. Every morning, Legambiente volunteers offer workshops for children to discover the sea, while diving centers accompany participants in sea-watching activities. The Via dell'Essenza, a sensory path that tells the story of the scents and plants of Elba, represents the "slow" common thread of the festival.
With its international scope and numerous institutional partners—from UNESCO-IOC to the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, from the Coast Guard to Legambiente and Marevivo—SEIF has become one of the most representative events of the Elban summer and a jewel of sustainable tourism in Tuscany. Participating means discovering Elba Island in a different light, made of sea, knowledge, and community.
The SEIF 2026, the eighth edition of the Sea Essence International Festival, brings the theme of "Mediterranean Itineraries" to Elba Island from June 26 to 28.
Every morning, workshops for children with Legambiente and diving activities. Events are free; some activities require booking via www.seaessence.eu.
Elba Island can be reached by ferry from Piombino (Province of Livorno) with arrival in Portoferraio; from there, Procchio (Municipality of Marciana) and Marciana Marina can be reached by car or local transport in about 15-25 minutes. Piombino is connected by train and motorway to the rest of Tuscany.
SEIF events are free of charge. For some activities (workshops, diving, walking the Via dell'Essenza), booking is required via the official website www.seaessence.eu and the InfoPark service.
We recommend booking ferries and accommodation well in advance: the last week of June is peak season on the island. For walks, bring comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen.
