About Grape Harvest Festival

Every autumn, the medieval village of Barbarano Romano, in the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia, celebrates the Grape Harvest Festival: a day dedicated to the rural traditions of northern Lazio. Piazza Guglielmo Marconi hosts a historical pageant, traditional grape stomping, and the distribution of fresh grape must. Food stalls serve up the flavors of autumn, from polenta with pork ribs to Etruscan soup with porcini mushrooms, while folk music and roasted chestnuts bring the afternoon to life. A free event organized by the local Pro Loco, blending local taste and folklore.

The Barbarano Romano Grape Harvest Festival

The Grape Harvest Festival is the autumn event where the town of Barbarano Romano, in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, celebrates the end of the grape harvest and the rural traditions of the Tuscia region. The event takes place in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, in the heart of the village, and is organized by the local Pro Loco with the involvement of the entire community. It is one of those village festivals where the agricultural calendar becomes a social occasion, and the memory of field labor is transformed into a day of conviviality.

The historical pageant and grape stomping

The highlight of the festival is the historical pageant of rural traditions, which winds through the tuff-stone streets of the village to the main square. Upon arrival, the grape stomping takes place using ancient methods, with the pressing of the clusters and the distribution of the freshly pressed must. It is a simple, collective gesture that brings the rituals of past harvests back to life, allowing even the youngest to discover how wine was once made in the Lazio countryside.

The flavors of the Tuscia autumn

The Grape Harvest Festival is also a journey into the simple, genuine cuisine of the Viterbo Tuscia. The food stalls offer seasonal dishes rooted in rural tradition, including:

  • polenta with pork ribs and sausage;
  • hunter-style stew (spezzatino alla cacciatora);
  • Etruscan soup with porcini mushrooms;
  • and, in the afternoon, the essential roasted chestnuts.

These are recipes that tell the story of a land of woods, vineyards, and pastures, where typical products follow the rhythm of the seasons and autumn is the most generous time of year.

Folk music and folklore

The day is accompanied by folk music, with performances by local folk groups that enliven the square between meals. The atmosphere is typical of village festivals: relaxed, familiar, and welcoming to visitors exploring the Tuscia in search of authentic traditions.

An Etruscan village between the Marturanum Park and the San Giuliano necropolis

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Barbarano Romano, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the Tuscia, perched on a tuff spur and built entirely of local volcanic stone. The town is located within the Marturanum Regional Natural Park, and just a few kilometers away lies the extraordinary Etruscan rock-cut necropolis of San Giuliano, with its tombs carved into the rock. Harvest, nature, and archaeology intertwine in a single day, offering a complete portrait of this corner of northern Lazio.
